TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Starting pitcher Parker Messick is one of 55 players on the Golden Spikes Award watch list, USA Baseball announced Tuesday afternoon. Messick is the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher and Freshman of the Year after posting an 8-2 record with 126 strikeouts in 2021.
Messick, a left-hander from Plant City, Florida, had 13 outings last season with at least 5.0 innings pitched and two or fewer earned runs allowed, including 11 straight. He is just the second player in ACC history to earn Freshman and Pitcher of the Year honors in the same season and joined Bryan Henry in 2007 as the only Seminoles named Pitcher of the Year.
Messick spent the 2021 summer playing with USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team. He begins the 2022 season as a first-team All-American, the Perfect Game Preseason Pitcher of the Year and the No. 3 overall starting pitcher from D1Baseball. Teammates Bryce Hubbart (12) and Carson Montgomery (41) are also listed on D1Baseball’s Top 150 starting pitchers list, and FSU is one of just two schools with three starting pitchers among the top 50.
Florida State opens the season Friday at 6 p.m. against James Madison. Single-game tickets for home games at Dick Howser Stadium are now on sale through Seminoles.com.
