SUNRISE, Fla. – Monty Mack scored a season-high 30 points and hit eight
free throws in the final minute as Massachusetts beat Florida State 69-60 on
Saturday in the Orange Bowl Classic.
Mack carried the Minutemen (5-3) was fouled four times after the Seminoles
(3-5) cut the lead to 60-58, and was flawless from the free-throw line.
Mack finished 7-of-18 from the field, with the majority of his misses coming
from 3-point range. He was 4-of-11 from beyond the arc.
The senior point guard didn’t miss from the free-throw line, though. He hit
all 12 of his free throws en route to setting the Classic record for points in
a game.
Mack broke the 29-point mark held by Miami’s Tim James and Florida
International’s Marshod Fairweather.
Chris Kirkland added 16 points for the Minutemen.
UMass led 39-31 with 14 minutes to play in the second half and looked as if
it would pull away. But the Seminoles used an 11-0 run to regain the lead for
the first time since having a 19-18 edge early in the first half.
Ron Hale ignited the run with seven straight points before teammates Delvon
Arrington and Adrian Crawford chipped in with baskets.
Hale finished with 22 points, but he could have helped Florida State with
better free-throw shooting. Hale missed four free throws – all in the second
half.
Arrington and Anderson added 10 points apiece for the Seminoles, who shot 45
percent from the field.
Miami tied the game at 57 with 2:27 remaining but went the next two minutes
without a field goal.
UMass led 33-27 at the half.
