Westrup Ties For Medalist Honors As Seminoles Finish 10th At Tar Heel Women’s Golf Invitational

Florida State University sophomore Caroline Westrup shot a three-under par 69 in the final round of the Lady Tar Heel Women’s Golf Invitational and finished tied for first in the individual standings to lead the Seminoles to a 10th place finish in the team standings. Westrup finished tied for first with Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M with identical scores throughout the event – 73-72-69 for 214 totals – to earn the second individual victory of her collegiate career. Westrup, the No. 13 ranked individual in the nation, finished in front of five golfers ranked ahead of her in the national standings and defeated the nation’s No. 5 ranked golfer, Lauren Hunt of North Carolina, by 11 strokes.
Westrup has now won two events and earned seven top-four finishes in nine career starts at Florida State. She also earned medalist honors at the spring 2006 Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia. In two events this fall, she has earned a second place finish (at the College of Charleston Cougar Fall Classic) and a tied for first place finish (at the Tar Heel Invitational) and is a total of six strokes under par in six rounds this fall.
Vanderbilt, which began the event ranked 18th in the nation by GolfWeek Magazine, won the team championship as the Commodores led the event wire-to-wire. The Commodores defeated No. 1 ranked Duke by six strokes. Chris Brady led Vanderbilt with a 219 score and a tied for fourth place finish.
Westrup was on top of her game in the third round as she carded 17 of 18 holes at par or better to finish with the second best single-round score of her Seminole career. She bogied her final hole to miss winning the individual title outright by one stroke. Westrup carded her career-best of 66 in the final round of the fall 2006 Cougar Classic on Sept. 12.
“I hit my second shot over the green and into the pine needles; I had never played out of the pine needles before,” said Westrup. “I hit my next shot within six feet and unfortunately I missed the putt. I’m okay with it because I will learn from the entire tournament and be better when I hit into a situation like that again.”
Senior Jaclyn Burch (Wildwood, Mo.) finished the tournament with a three-over par 75 to finish tied for 18th place. She played well on throughout the final round with 14 holes at par or better including a birdie on the par four 10th hole. Burch has now earned 10 top-20 finishes during her four-year Seminole career.
Senior Kayla Shaul (Cumming, Ga.) and juniors Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) and Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) also played in the event for the Seminoles. Shaul shot a tournament-best 77 in the second round; Brummett shot an event-best 78 in the third and final round and Wright a three-round best of 81 in the second round.
The Seminoles return to the course at the Auburn Tiger Derby Invitational beginning Oct. 27. They close out their fall season at the NGCA Match Play Championship beginning Nov. 3 at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
