Seminoles Win Team Championship At LSU / Cleveland Women’s Classic

BATON ROUGE, La. –
The Florida State University women’s golf team – led by individual medalist Caroline Westrup – won the team championship of the LSU / Cleveland Classic with a six-stroke victory over Louisiana State at the University Club. The Seminoles led the event wire to wire in earning their first team championship since winning the Florida State hosted Chrysler Challenge during the spring of 2007. Westrup, a two-time All-American, moved into first place in the second round and earned the fourth individual championship of her Florida State career.
The team championship is the 21st and third in the last two years under Head Coach Debbie Dillman. The Seminoles have won at least one tournament championship in six of the last seven years.
Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) carded a three-under par 69 in the third round and finished with a six-under par 210 total for the three-round event. She was in a tied for fifth in the individual standings after carding a two-over par 73 in the first round. She closed the event with scores of 68 in the second round and 69 in the third to finish the final two rounds at seven-under par. Westrup’s three-round score of 210 ranks as the second best of her career as she added to her career victory total.
Westrup defeated Lauren Doughtie of NC State by four strokes to win the championship.
Senior Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) earned the third best placing of her career as she finished in a tie for 11th in the individual standings. She was the individual leader after carding a season-best two-under par 70 in the first round and finished with a three-round total of 223. Wright’s total of 223 is the best 54-hole score of her career.
Senior Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) finished in a tie for 26th place as she moved up from a tie for 61st in the individual standings after one round. She carded scores of 73 and 75 in the second and third rounds after earning a 79 in the first round. Brummett’s finish ranks as the best of her senior season.
The Seminoles begin play at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University Georgia March 21-23 as they play a tournament for the third consecutive week.
