Seminole Women’s Golf Team Finishes In Third Place At ACC Championship

Florida State finished in third place in the team standings and junior All-American Caroline Westrup finished in second place in the individual standings as play in the 20th Annual ACC Championship on the Legends Course at LPGA International came to a close on Sunday. The Seminoles’ third place finish is their highest finish since they finished in third place in 2001. Westrup’s second place individual finish tied the highest finish by a Seminole player in school history and was the highest since Tiffany Faucette finished in second place in 1995.
No. 2 Duke won the championship on the final hole as both teams walked on the 18th green tied after 53 holes. The Blue Devils’ Amanda Blumenherst pared the hole while Virginia’s Calle Nielson bogeyed the hole to give Duke the one-shot victory. The one shot victory for the Blue Devils set a championship record for smallest margin of victory eclipsing a pair of two shot wins: North Carolina over Florida State in 1992 and Wake Forest over Florida State on 1995.
Not only did Blumenherst give Duke the team title with her par but she won the individual championship for the third consecutive season. Blumenherst defeated Florida State’s Caroline Westrup by one stroke for the individual championship as Westrup bogeyed the final hole.
Westrup and Blumenherst, who were playing in the same threesome for the first time during the tournament battled throughout the round. Westrup carded a two-under par 70 while Blumenherst scored a one-under par 71 in the final round. The individual championship came down to the final shot for both players.
Freshman Macarena Silva (Santiago, Chile) tie her career-low score with an even par 72 and finished with a six-over par score of 222 in her first career ACC Championship. Silva carded three birdies on the front nine and made the turn at two-under par. She finished her round with scores of par on seven of her last eight holes. Her score of 72 tied her career best for her freshman season; she also carded a 72 during the second round of the University of Alabama / Ann Rhoads Invitational during the fall of 2007. Silva finished in a tie for ninth in the individual standings.
Senior Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) saved her best round for the final day as she carded a one-under par 71 and finished with a three-day total of 224. Her score of 71 in the final round of this year’s ACC Championship is the best of her career in the event. Brummett played the final 15 holes of the round under par after recording a birdie on hole No. 3. She recorded three birdies and one bogey during the round. Her score of 71 tied her score for her senior season and was only one stroke from tying her career low score of 70 which she has carded twice during her career. Brummett finished in a tie for 15th place.
Senior Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C) finished the final round of her fourth career ACC Championship with a five-over par 78. She finished her round of play with 12 holes at par or better with one birdie. Junior Lauren Cousart (Athens, Ga.) finished in a tie for 19th place with a score of 226.
The Seminoles will now await the announcement of the NCAA Regional selections on April 28. The Seminoles have advanced to the NCAA Regionals in five of the last six seasons and 14 times since 1991.
