VALDOSTA, Ga. –
Florida State University junior Macarena Silva finished in a tie for 10th place in the individual standings to lead the Seminoles to a 10th place finish in the team standings as play in the inaugural Kinderlou Forest Challenge at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Club came to a close. The tied for 10th place finish marked Silva’s third top-10 finish in six events this year and the fifth of her career.
Silva carded a one-over par score of 74 in the third and final round to finish with a 223 total for the 54-hole event. She finished six holes out of the lead.
Tulane, who took the lead in the first round and led wire-to-wire, won the team championship with a seven stroke victory over Ohio State. The Green Wave totaled the best team score of the first round, the second best team score of the second round and the best team score of the final round in winning the event. Janine Fellows of Tulane won the individual championship with a two stroke victory over Marta Silva Zamora of Georgia and Marina Alex of Vanderbilt.
Silva (Santiago, Chile) finished three strokes over par for the tournament as she carded scores of 73-76-74 in finishing in a tie for 10th place. She completed the event only three strokes out of the top five as she finished at even par in the first round, three over par in the second round and only one over par in the final round. Silva was in a tie for 17th place after the first round and made up seven positions in the standings over the final round and a half.
“I felt good on the course even though the weather wasn’t that great,” said Silva. “We played for two days against the watch and that may have been something that affected us as a team throughout the day. But the season has just started and we are excited about what is ahead of us. Coach (Kate) Golden is going to help us build ourselves in so many ways and we are very excited as we move on to our next event.”
Each of the golfers on the 18 teams in the event saw the second round on Monday stopped during play because of darkness and spent the third round watching the cold and blustery weather in the area of the golf course.
Freshman Jessica Negron (Ocala, Fla.) finished as the second highest ranking Seminole as she finished in a tie for 35th place with a three-round total of 230. She played her best golf in the second round with a two-over par score of 75. It marked the second consecutive tournament that she has finished as Florida State’s second ranking golfer – she finished in a tie for 21st place at the spring season opening lady Puerto Rico Open.
