Hugh Durham came to Florida State from Louisville and led the Seminole basketball teams of the late 1950’s and later coached FSU to the national title game. As a player from 1956-59, Durham scored 1,281 points for an average of 18.9 a game. Twenty-five years later, he was still on the school’s top ten lists for scoring average, total points and free throw percentage. His 43 points against Stetson still ranked second in FSU history in the year 2000. In his senior year, Hugh was named honorable mention All-American. After a term as Bud Kennedy’s assistant at FSU, Durham became head coach in 1966 and posted a record of 230-95 from 1966-78. He led three teams to the NCAA Tournament including the 1971-72 squad that advanced to the national title game against John Wooden and the UCLA Bruins.
