Hall of Fame Class: 1991 (Women's Track and Field)

Marita Payne was the fastest female ever in the Western Hemisphere in the 400 meters with a time of 50.06 before she had even reached her senior season at FSU. By the time she graduated, Payne was a twenty-one time NCAA All-American and she went on to win two silver medals for Canada at the 1984 Olympic Games. Her school record 400 meter mark of 49.91 came when she won the NCAA Championship in the event in 1984. She won a total of four NCAA Championships in individual events and four more with FSU relay teams. She was a member of FSU’s National Championship team in 1984 and married former FSU and NBA basketball star Mitchell Wiggins.
