Three Named To All-ACC Academic Women’s Golf Team

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State University juniors Laure Castelain, Carlton Kuhlo and Alex Milan have been named to the All-ACC Academic Women’s Golf team as announced by ACC Commissioner John Swofford. It marks the ninth consecutive year that at least three Seminoles have been named to the team with Castelain earning her way onto the team for the third consecutive season, Kuhlo being named for the second consecutive season and Milan being named to the team for the first time in her career.
Castelain becomes just the fifth women’s golfer in school history to earn the honor three or more times. She joins Whitney Brummett (2006, 2007, 2008), Macarena Silva (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011), Hannah Thomson (2010, 2011, 2012) and Caroline Westrup (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) as Seminoles who have been honored as members of the All-ACC Academic Women’s golf team at least three times in their careers. Castelain can become only the third Seminole in history to be named to the team four times with a strong academic finish as she earns her degree in finance in May of 2015.
Castelain, the Seminoles’ team captain in 2014, finished as Florida State’s third leading scorer with a career-low 74.93 stroke average this season. She played in her third consecutive ACC Championship tournament and played in nine of 11 events during her junior season. Castelain (Bordeaux, France) earned her third career top-10 individual placing as she finished in a tie for 10th place in the Seminole hosted Florida State Match-Up in February at SouthWood Golf Club in Tallahassee.
Kuhlo (Tallahassee, Fla.) enjoyed her best and most productive year as a junior as she was a member of the Seminoles’ line-up for the ACC Championships and the NCAA East Regional at SouthWood Golf Club in Tallahassee. She established career-bests for a single round score (68 in the second round of the Lady Gator Invitational), for 36 holes (145 in both the Alamo Invitational and the Lady Gator Invitational) and a three-round tournament score (219 at the Lady Gator Invitational) and earned the best finish of her career as she placed in a tie for 13th at the Lady Gator in the spring of 2014.
Milan (Lutz, Fla.) earned All-ACC Honors as one of the top golfers in the ACC in 2014. She played in a career-high seven events during the spring 2014 season including her third career ACC Championship and her second career NCAA Regional Championship. Milan earned the first individual victory of her collegiate career as she captured medalist honors at the spring season opening Florida Challenge. She won the event with scores of 72-70=142 to claim the title.
Milan is one of six golfers who earned All-ACC honors and All-ACC Academic honors this year. Milan is joined by NC State’s Brittany Marchand, Clemson’s Sloan Shanahan, Duke’s Laetitia Beck and Celine Boutier and Miami’s Daniella Darquea and honorees on the golf course and in the classroom.
“I am happy for Laure, Carlton and Alex to be named to the All-ACC Academic Team,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “Performing well academically is important for every member of our team. Our girls are committed to success in the classroom just as much as they are committed to success on the golf course. It’s great to be one of five teams in the league to have members of the All-ACC team as well as the All-ACC Academic team.”
All 11 ACC schools that compete in the sport of women’s golf are represented on this year’s academic team. Florida State of one of six schools with at least three honorees.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award was established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the award must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete, regardless of classification, must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
