FORT COLLINS, Co. – The Florida State volleyball team is set for its second non-conference tournament of the season, as it takes on TCU, Colorado State and Cincinnati in the Colorado State Tournament August 31-September 2.
The Seminoles will face the Horned Frogs Friday, August 31 at 3 pm MT to open the tournament, then will play the hosting Rams on Saturday at 7:30 pm local time on the Mountain West Network. FSU then closes out the tournament with a 10:00 am match against the Bearcats on Sunday morning.
After starting off the season 0-2, the Seminoles are looking to bounce back and pick up three wins this weekend before its home opener on Sept. 7.
A win over TCU on Friday would snap a four-match win streak for the Horned Frogs, and a win over the Rams would be FSU’s first ranked win of the season and the fourth time FSU defeated an AVCA Top-25 team without being ranked under head coach Chris Poole.
The Seminoles face 2017 opponents TCU and CSU again this weekend, two teams they hosted at the Home2 Suites by Hilton Tallahassee Seminole Invitational. FSU defeated the Horned Frogs in four sets, but fell to the Rams in their only loss of the weekend.
The last time FSU saw Cincinnati was in 2016, when the Seminoles beat the Bearcats in four sets in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Gainesville, Fla. FSU went on to defeat the hosting Gators to advance to the Sweet 16.
AVCA Top-25
FSU enters the season unranked, but received 17 votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 preseason poll.
The Seminoles have now defeated an AVCA Top-25 team without being ranked three times under Poole – a 3-0 sweep over No. 8 Illinois in 2009, a 3-1 victory over No. 23 Tulsa in 2011 and a 3-0 win over No. 20 Miami in the same year. Florida State went to the Elite Eight in 2009 and the Final Four in 2011.
FSU vs. TCU
TCU opened the 2018 season hosting the Cowtown Classic, where they swept UAB, Green Bay and SIUE, and turned around to defeat North Dakota in four sets at home. Freshman Élan McCall earned the Big 12 Rookie of the Week honor after she tallied 59 kills and a team-best 4.54 kills per set in opening weekend.
FSU and TCU have met twice in program history, with the Seminoles winning both matches in Tallahassee. The last time they met, No. 15 FSU earned a four-set win over an unranked TCU team in the Home2 Suites by Hilton Tallahassee Seminole Invitational in 2017.
FSU vs. CSU
Colorado State dropped their home opener against No. 12 Illinois last weekend, losing in five sets in front of a record-setting crowd. The Rams turned around to sweep UNC Wilmington the next day, and most recently swept Northern Colorado on Tuesday (8/28).
The two teams have only met twice in the series, with CSU taking both matches in Tallahassee. The last time they met, Colorado State handed FSU its only loss in the Home2 Suites by Hilton Tallahassee Seminole Invitation at the beginning of the 2017 season. FSU has never faced a ranked CSU team.
FSU vs. UC
Cincinnati opened the season at the Miami Best Western Sycamore Inn Invitational in Oxford, Ohio last weekend, defeating UC Santa Barbara in five sets and sweeping Saint Louis before falling to the hosting Redhawks.
The two teams have met 20 times, with eight of FSU’s 18 wins in the series coming in neutral territory. The last time the two met, Florida State took down Cincinnati in four sets in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Gainesville, Fla. FSU went on to defeat the hosting Gators to advance to the Sweet 16. FSU has not lost to UC since 1982, and has won the last 15 matches against the Bearcats.
