HISTORY – FSU vs. JU
Florida State holds the all-time series advantage against the Dolphins, 127-37, including winning six consecutive over the past two seasons. Under head coach Mike Martin, Florida State is 90-24 against Jacksonville.
The teams will face off twice more this year in Tallahassee, on April 2 and May 7. The Seminoles visit Jacksonville again on March 26 to face Florida at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
WEEKEND RECAP
The Seminoles outscored Maine 42-9 over four games to start the season. FSU’s combined no-hitter on Opening Day, from Drew Parrish (1-0), Grady and Chase Haney, was the 10th no-hitter in program history and the fourth under head coach Mike Martin.
FSU followed that up with a 16-3 win in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader. FSU drew 14 walks, was hit by six pitches and had 10 hits in the win. In game two Saturday, Maine scored five runs in the fourth inning, including a grand slam, to take a 5-2 lead before FSU slowly rallied back.
Down a run to start the seventh inning, which was the final frame of the game as agreed to by the team’s prior to the season, Elijah Cabell walked, Robby Martin tied the game with a double off the wall and Mat Nelson won the game on a sacrifice fly.
FSU won Sunday’s finale 9-1 behind strong pitching from Shane Drohan (3.0 IP, 7 K), Antonio Velez (4.0 IP, win), Jack Anderson and J.C. Flowers (1.0 IP each).
Robby Martin led Florida State at the plate, hitting .438 with 9 RBI. Reese Albert and Mike Salvatore each had 7 RBI, while five regulars reached base in at least half their plate appearances.
OF NOTE
Robby Martin’s five RBI on Friday were the most in FSU history for a freshman in a season opener. It was FSU’s first five RBI game in a season opener since junior Gage West had 5 in 2016.
MARTIN’S FINAL SEASON
Head coach Mike Martin became the winningest coach in NCAA history in FSU’s 3-2, 13-inning win at Clemson last season. Martin is just 9 wins shy of 2,000 for his career and is 1,991-713-4 overall in 40 seasons.
Martin announced in June that 2019 would be his final year coaching the Seminoles.
