TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – In an effort to add the necessary strength to her knee and go through a full recovery, Florida State Women’s Basketball junior guard Amaya Brown will redshirt the upcoming 2020-21 season.

Brown, an excellent on-ball defender who started three games as a freshman in 2018-19, will retain two more years of eligibility beyond this year. After the 2020-21 season, she would also be eligible as a junior in 2021-22 because all winter-athletes gain an additional season of NCAA competition due to the pandemic. Brown would then be able to compete in the 2022-23 year as well.

The Albuquerque, New Mexico, native battled back from her season-ending injury as a freshman to play in 13 games as a sophomore last year. She has become one of FSU’s better perimeter defenders, and in her first year she had a large impact with a team-best +13.12 plus-minus rating per 40 minutes of action.

Brown came to Florida State as the top player out of New Mexico, being a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in her home state. As an aggressive guard who dominated the high school circuit, she set a state single-season record with 345 rebounds.

Following the cancellation of FSU’s season opener at Florida A&M, the Seminoles now open their season at home vs. Florida on Sunday, Nov. 29.
