TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) — Charlton “CY” Young has been named the No. 1 high major Division I minority assistant coach in college basketball by the Minority Coaches Association. Young, who is entering his eighth season at Florida State, has helped lead the Seminoles to unprecedented heights including to the Elite Eight of the 2018 NCAA Tournament and to the 2020 ACC Championship.

Young was one of two ACC coaches on the list which included Jason Williford of Virginia (No. 2), Ira Bowman of Auburn (No. 3), Alvin Brooks III of Baylor (No. 4) and Orlando “Bino” Ransom of Maryland (No. 5).

“I’m honored to be recognized by the Minority Coaches Association,” said Young. “I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to do what I love each and every day – and that is to coach and teach the great sport of basketball to young people. I am also fortunate to work for the best head coach in America – J. Leonard Hamilton – at a school that prides itself on being great in everything we do on and off of the court.”

Young helped lead Florida State to a record-setting year in 2020. The Seminoles finished with a 26-5 overall record and a 16-4 mark in ACC play. Florida State’s 16 conference wins set a single-season school record and resulted in it winning the first regular season ACC Championship in school history. The Seminoles were well on their way to earning the highest seed in school history in the NCAA Tournament when it was cancelled because of the coronavirus.

In his first seven seasons at Florida State, Young has played a major role in helping the Seminoles win 165 games (an average of 23.6 games a season), 75 ACC games (an average of 10.7 conference wins per season) and play in five postseason tournaments including the 2017, 2018 and 2019 NCAA Tournaments.

Young is entering his 25th season as a coach at the collegiate level during the 2018-19 season. He was a successful head coach at Georgia Southern (2010-13) where he helped the Eagles become one of the top programs in the Southern Conference.

Young has been an incredibly successful assistant coach in seven different conferences including the ACC and the SEC.

Young has been instrumental in not only the Seminoles’ success on the court, he is considered to be one of the nation’s top recruiters.

The Seminoles have won 20 or more games in five consecutive seasons, led the ACC with 16 wins in 2020, tied for the ACC lead with 26 wins in 2020, is the fourth winningest program in the ACC since the start of the 2005-06 season and is 55-13 in the last two seasons for a winning percentage of better than 80 percent.

Young’s recruiting success has helped the Seminoles’ 2021 recruiting class to the nation’s No. 1 ranking by every recruiting service. He has helped recruit three of the nation’s top 24 prep prospects in the upcoming to class to Florida State and has helped recruit at least one five-star recruit to Florida State in each of the last three years.

Two of the players he recruited – Devin Vassell and Patrick Williams – are both projected as lottery picks in the 2020 NBA Draft while a third Seminole – Trent Forrest – is also projected to be selected in the Nov. 18 NBA Draft.
