Led by Bryce Hubbart’s career-high 13 strikeouts, FSU set a school record with 47 strikeouts in a three-game series. Hubbart was named the ACC Pitcher of the Week, throwing just 5.0 innings to record his 13 strikeouts. Messick struck out 11 on Friday, the most for a Seminole on Opening Day in 15 years.
Messick will start on the mound for the Seminoles on Friday looking to win his 10th consecutive decision. The sophomore left-hander struck out 11 against James Madison, just one shy of his career high.
Ross Dunn will start for the Noles on Sunday again after pitching the first 2.1 innings in game three against James Madison last week. It will be Dunn’s third career start.
Redshirt senior Reese Albert leads the FSU offense with a .667 batting average through four games. He went 7-for-9 against the Dukes, with three doubles, and added a single Tuesday at Jacksonville.
Alex Toral, a transfer from Miami, earned his first home run as a Seminole with a grand slam on Saturday. He also hit three doubles and a team-high nine RBI on the weekend.
Tuesday at Jacksonville, freshmen James Tibbs and Jaime Ferrer, along with Albert, extended their season-opening hitting streaks to four games. Shortstop Jordan Carrion made his FSU debut against the Dolphins, finishing with a hit, stolen base, run and RBI.
FSU leads the all-time series with Samford 21-2 with all of the meetings in Tallahassee. The last time the two teams met was in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional in 2018, and the last regular-season series was FSU’s three-game sweep in 2017.
