M. Basketball Defeats Notre Dame, 84-71

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Darin Green Jr. scored a game-high 20 points on six made field goals, four 3-pointers, and four free throws to lead Florida State to an 84-71 victory over Notre Dame at the Joyce Center. Green Jr. led five Seminoles in double figure scoring, Green, Jalen Warley (17 points), Matthew Cleveland (14 points), Caleb Mills (11 points), and Cameron Corhen (10 points) to improve Florida State’s ACC record to 4-4.
Matthew Cleveland secured his eighth consecutive double double against Notre Dame with 14 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. The last Seminole to reach the prestigious milestone was Reggie Royals who finished the 1970-71 season with nine consecutive double doubles. Cleveland will have the chance to join Royals in Saturday’s game at Pittsburgh.
Cleveland’s 16 rebounds are tied for the second most in an ACC game by a Seminole – tied with Al Thornton against Virginia on February 7, 2007. The school record for rebounds by a Seminole in an ACC game is 17 by Michael Joiner against Wake Forest on January 9, 2001. Cleveland’s 16 defensive rebounds established a school record by a Florida State player in an ACC game.
Warley scored his a career-high totaling 17 points on four made field goals and eight free throws. He surpassed his former career-high of 15 points against Duke in February of 2022, and made the most free throws of his career, shooting eight for 10 (.800) from the free throw line.
Mills shot a perfect five for five from the free throw line against the Fighting Irish, marking his 22nd straight free throw in ACC play. As a Seminole, he has made 66 of 77 (.857) attempted free throws in conference play. Mills’ 11 points was his ninth consecutive game scoring in double figures.
Corhen continued to be a sharpshooter from the free throw line, shooting two for two to increase his free throw shooting percentage to .917 (11-12) in the last six games. Corhens’ 10 points marked his seventh game scoring in double figures.
Due to the outstanding success by the Seminoles at the charity stripe, Florida State has now shot 78 percent or better eight times this season from the line. Against Notre Dame, the Seminoles had a .793 (23-29) shooting percentage.
Florida State shutout Notre Dame in the opening minutes of the first half, with scoring drives from Mills, Cleveland, Corhen, and Green Jr. to give the Seminoles a 13-0 lead four minutes into the half.
This momentum proved to be important as the Seminoles led by 24 points midway through the first half (32-8). The Seminoles led 39-29 lead heading into intermission.
Compared to the Seminole’s first half shooting percentage from the field (.452, 14-31), the second half produced an efficient .591 (13-22) shooting percentage from Warley’s four made field goals and Cleveland’s three.
The real turnaround for the Seminoles was from the free throw line, shooting 16-21 (.762) in the second half compared to an equally impressive but smaller shooting percentage, .875 (7-8) in the first half.
The Seminoles scored 28 points in the paint and 12 points off the bench. Florida State optimized off their opponent’s turnovers, scoring 10 points off of Notre Dame’s four turnovers.
Florida State will continue their time on the road, traveling to Pennsylvania to face off against the Pittsburgh Panthers on January 21st with tip off at 3pm. The game will be televised on ACCN. This matchup will complete the Seminole’s two-game road trip, as they return home to the Donald L. Tucker Center on Tuesday, January 24th against Miami.
