DALLAS, Tex. – Florida State's Brett Roberts defeated Arizona's Johnny Walker to give the Seminoles a 3-2 victory over Arizona and the championship of the Jackson T. Stephen's Cup at the Trinity Forest Golf Club. Roberts and Walker were tied through 16 holes in the deciding match when Roberts won hole No. 17 by a 3-2 margin to move to 1UP in the match scoring. The pair then tied the final hole to give Roberts and the Seminoles the championship.
A year after finishing in second place in the Stephen's Cup, Florida State and Head Coach Trey Jones claimed the championship in 2023.
"I really want to thank these guys (the FSU players) for everything they do for us every day," said Jones. "You can't replicate (match play). You can't do it at home. It has to be done here. They (our players) put themselves in that situation to give themselves a chance to win a golf tournament. It's something they'll never forget, and I won't forget.
"I think so(we are the team to beat) anytime we go out with these guys. After the practice round, how comfortable they were and the focus we had coming out, it felt like we were going to be tough to beat. But you never know in this game. Some things aren't in your control; they did a great job."
Kjettrup, a senior, earned the first point of the day for the Seminoles with a 4&3 victory over Arizona's Filip Jakubcik. He won the first hole of the match, never trailed, and increased his lead to four holes with three remaining to be played to put Florida State up, 1-0.
The Wildcats took a 2-1 the lead with victories by Yannick Malik over Florida State's Cole Anderson (2&1), and by Tiger Christensen over the Seminoles Gray Albright (2&1) – both by the slimmest of margins.
Florida State's Luke Clanton then let his putter do his talking as he made a sensational 20-foot putt to each a 5&3 win over Arizona's Zach Polo and tie the match at 2-2.
Roberts then clinched the silver Stephens Cup with his win over Walker. In the deciding match, neither player led by more than one hole while the fierce competitors played through eight ties.
Florida State plays next in the prestigious East Lake Cup October 30-Novemeber 1 at the historic East Lake Club in Atlanta.
