Clanton Clinches Trip to East Lake Cup Finals; Noles Outlast Gators

10/31/2023 8:40:00 PM | Men's Golf

Tallahassee, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Florida State Men's Golf sophomore Luke Clanton continued his tremendous play in career match play, defeating Florida's Matthew Kress, 1UP, in the decisive fifth and final match of the East Lake Cup Match Play Semifinal on Tuesday night at Atlanta Athletic Club.

Clanton delivered the winning birdie putt on the 18th hole to secure the victory and exact a bit of revenge on the Gators, whom defeated FSU by the same 3-2 score in last year's NCAA Match Play Semifinal at Grayhawk Golf Club. With Clanton 4UP thru 14 holes, he managed to hang on and clinch FSU's spot in the championship against North Carolina.
The Seminoles and Tar Heels will battle for the East Lake Cup title on Wednesday beginning at 12:30 p.m. Live coverage will be provided on the Golf Channel from 3-6 p.m. UNC defeated Georgia Tech, 3-2, in the other match play semifinal on Tuesday.

Delivering huge wins for the Seminoles were senior Gray Albright (3&1) as well as freshman Tyler Weaver (2&1). Albright defeated UF's Ian Gilligan to help swing the momentum of the entire match, tying things up on the 12th hole. Albright then dominated holes 14-17, winning three of the four holes while halving hole 16 to get the big win.

Weaver and Parker Bell were knotted up through 14 holes before Weaver took the lead after a birdie on the par-3 15th hole. Weaver then recorded a 4 on the 16th hole to go 2UP before closing it out on the 17th when he halved the hole with Bell.

The Seminoles hope to win their second consecutive match play title after winning the prestigious Jackson Stephens Cup on Oct. 11, defeating Arizona. Wednesday's match with UNC will be a rematch of last year's Stephens Cup championship.

All-American Brett Roberts will tee off on Wednesday against UNC's Kenan Poole at 12:30 p.m. Frederik Kjettrup follows at 12:50 p.m. against David Ford, and Clanton continues at 1:10 p.m. against Maxwell Ford of the Tar Heels.

The final two pairings include Albright at 1:30 p.m. vs. UNC's Austin Greaser, and Weaver at 1:50 p.m. vs. UNC's Peter Fountain.
