TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – "Never tell people what you are thinking, tell them what you want them to know."

It's a saying that sophomore big man Cam Corhen's dad always impressed upon him while he was growing up.

Corhen has always been bigger – and often times better -- than players his own age. In most games while he was learning to play the game of basketball, he was the best player on the floor. However it was the people on the sidelines, and with the whistles at practice, who molded the type of player he is today.

Corhen and the Seminoles continue their 2023-24 campaign Monday, November 13, at 7:00 p.m. on ACCNX, when they tip off against the Central Michigan Chippewas in the Tucker Center. It is the first time Florida State and Central Michigan will play in the sport of basketball.

During his senior year of high school, Corhen played at Sunrise Christian Academy in Wichita, Kansas, where he helped lead the Buffaloes to a 25-2 record and No. 1 overall seed in the Geico National Championship Tournament. Corhen, one of the team leaders, led the Buffaloes to their best season in program history with the help of many of his experiences away from the court.

"Playing with six or seven high-major guys, you're not always the best player," said Corhen. "There's only one ball and so many high-major guys. That's something that definitely helped me get ready for college because it helped me to find a role and get to tough."

Finding the role has been a strong suit of Corhen who enjoyed a strong freshman season during which he led the Seminoles in field goal percentage while starting 21 of Florida State's 32 games.

He credits Florida State Associate Head Coach Stan Jones as playing an important role in his success.

"I talk to Coach Jones a lot, and every time I talk to him, I play better," said Corhen. "He talks about efficiency. He says, 'it's not about how many shots you get, it's about how many quality shots you take.'

"That definitely was advice that helped me last year, and that will help me throughout my career."

"Cam is a young man who is still just scratching the surface of how good he is going to be as a basketball player," said Jones. "He is from a basketball family and he has high aspirations for himself at Florida State. As he continues to mature, I am expecting to see his impact on our success and his production to grow at the speed maturity slows the game down in his mind. As the old saying goes, 'the best is still yet to come for him.' It still makes my toes tingle to see young guys grow into their future adulthood. Cam has been paying the price to take his next steps."

As a freshman, Corhen worked on establishing his role throughout the first month of the season. However, after the Seminoles' game against Notre Dame in December, he moved into a starter's role in Florida State's lineup.

Corhen continues to define his role this year with a new squad. He works each and every day to improve from last year and grows throughout each practice.

"My role is as a leader," Corhen said. "Not with extended minutes, points and rebounds or impressive statistics, but as a leader by example," said Corhen. "I'd say one of my roles is as an important locker room guy; as a leader my teammates look up to especially since you have a lot of new players including transfers. My most important role could very well be in the locker room."

His father, Richard, has been teaching him to be a leader during his entire life. Corhen's father played at the University of Georgia for Seminole Hall of Fame player and coach Hugh Durham.

The younger Corhen emulates his father in the way he approaches being a team leader.

"I like to lead by example," said Corhen said. "I am not one of those leaders who's just going to jump up and rally everybody, but I'm somebody who my teammates can look at, and at the end of the day just know I'm doing the right things as a leader."

Among Corhen's core beliefs is leading by example and sometimes leading by saying nothing at all.

Corhen describes himself as humble, hard-working, and energetic -- all traits he shares with his father. As he continues to exhibit his leadership skill with his teammates, he knows how good the Seminoles can be this year.

"We can be as good as any Florida State team that's been here," said Corhen. "Top to bottom we have the talent, and we have two or three guys at every position who are really good players. I feel like as long as our minds are right, and we stay focused on what the coaching staff tells us, we can go as far as any Florida State team."
