Seminoles Win Sunshine Slam Championship Over No. 18 Colorado, 77-71

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Florida State's Jamir Watkins scored a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds in earning tournament MVP honors as Florida State defeated 18th ranked Colorado, 77-71 in overtime, to win the championship of the 2023 Sunshine Slam at the Ocean Center. The Seminoles scored the first nine points of the overtime period and outscored the Buffaloes by a 17-11 margin in overtime to extend their ongoing NCAA-best streak of consecutive overtime victories to 14. Florida State has won each of its overtime games since a 101-90 double-overtime win over Syracuse on January 13, 2018 at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee.

Junior Jalen Warley came alive in the second as he totaled 19 points – with 16 of his 19 coming after halftime. The Seminoles' point guard scored 11 second half points and five more in the overtime period.

Warley led four Seminoles in double figure scoring with 19 points. He was followed by Watkins (18 points), Darin Green Jr (12 points) and De'Ante Green (10 points).

This matchup had the feeling of a March battle with both teams playing hard on each possession on both sides of the court. There were nine lead changes and 13 ties before Warley scored on a jumper in the paint to give the Seminoles a 62-60 lead they would not relinquish.

Warley was Florida State's (4-1) leading scorer for the first time this season and the second time in his career as he both attacked and was patient in running the Seminoles' both offensively and defensively. He stuck the final dagger in the Buffaloes' undefeated season with a dunk with 32 seconds remaining to be played in overtime that gave Florida State a 74-67 lead. His dunk came as Colorado (4-1) worked to make the game a two-possession game with 20 seconds to play.

Throughout the game, Warley was outstanding with three assists and three steals.

Watkins earned his second double-double in less than a week with 18 points and 11 rebounds. He tied his career high for rebounds with 11 also coming while at VCU against Radford on December 14, 2022. He started the second half with two consecutive layups in the first minute to put Florida State up 31-30.

Florida State's length kept the Buffalo's explosive scoring offense at bay, scoring six unanswered points in the first two minutes of overtime. Green Jr. scored the final points of the game at the free throw line with nine seconds to play to give Florida State its first win over a nationally ranked team in five games this season.

Green Jr. earned a steal with a minute left in overtime and made two free throws with nine seconds left in the game. He scored 12 points against Colorado to go along with two rebounds and four steals.

Florida State, which entered the game as the ACC leader in steals, added to its season with a season-high 17 steals. Watkins and Green Jr. totaled four steals each, while Miller and Warley totaled three each. The Seminoles' 17 steals is tied for the ninth highest single game total in school history, and the most since earning 18 in an 81-58 win over Nicholls State on November 9, 2007.

Florida State returns to Tallahassee for the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge facing the Bulldogs from the University of Georgia at 9:15 on Wednesday, November 29th in the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. The game will air on ACC Network.
