TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State's Jamir Watkins, who was named the MVP as he led the Seminoles to the championship of the Sunshine Slam, is one of five players named as an Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week by the United States Basketball Writers Association.
The USBWA has expanded its national player of the week program which is affiliated with the Oscar Robertson Trophy to include five players each week. The USBWA has selected only one player each week since the start of the 2009-10 season and has expanded the program for the 2023-24 season to included five players. Each Tuesday during the regular season, the USBWA will select five standouts from the 32 Division I conference players of the week to be recognized.
Watkins was also named as the ACC Player of the Week (co) for the first time in his career on Monday as selected by a blue ribbon panel of writers and broadcaster who cover the league. It's the first time Watkins – a transfer student-athlete from VCU – has been named as an ACC Player of the Week and as an Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week.
Watkins averaged 18.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 2.0 steals in victories over UNLV and No. 18 Colorado in leading the Seminoles to a 2-0 record last week. The Trenton, N.J., native scored 19 points with four rebounds and a career-high eight assists in FSU's victory over UNLV in the semifinals of the Sunshine Slam. He returned the next night and posted his fourth career double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds with four assists and four steals as Florida State defeated Colorado to win the Sunshine Slam tournament championship.
Watkins shot 68.2 percent from the field (15-of-22) and 50 percent from the 3-point line (2-of-4) as Florida State upped its record to 4-1 on the season.
Florida State plays host to Georgia in the inaugural ACC/SEC Challenge on Wednesday, November 29, at the Donald L. Tucker Center.
