Noles Fall in 10 at No. 8 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Virginia – No. 8 Virginia scored unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth and 10th innings Friday to beat Florida State, 3-2, in front of 3,006 fans at Disharoon Park. Virginia improved to 14-0 at home with the victory.

Starting pitcher Jackson Baumeister allowed just one run in 5.0 innings, while the FSU relievers did not allow an earned run in 4.2 innings.

FSU led for the first half of the game after DeAmez Ross led off with a walk and scored on Ben Barrett’s groundout. After the Cavaliers tied it in the sixth inning, FSU was working out of trouble for the back half of the game. Andrew Armstrong faced the bases loaded with no outs in the eighth inning when he got a strikeout and a double play to keep the game tied.

Treyton Rank doubled with one out in the ninth inning to give FSU runners at second and third. McGwire Holbrook pinch hit and reached on a fielder error by the third baseman to score Nander De Sedas and give FSU the lead.

Virginia was down to its final strike twice in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, Virginia walked and singled before the runners moved up a base on an error. The tying run scored on a wild pitch.

In the 10th, pinch-hitter Chris Baker reached on an error that allowed the winning run to score from second base.

OF NOTE:

  • Jaime Ferrer started as the designated hitter, his first start as DH this season. He was 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to a career-long 13 games. During that span, Ferrer is 23-for-57 (.404) with 10 runs, 13 RBI, five doubles, two home runs and three walks.
  • DeAmez Ross walked twice and singled in his first three plate appearances; he has reached safely in all nine games to begin his career and has an OBP of .477.
  • Treyton Rank singled, matching his career-long hit streak of three games. He also had FSU’s lone extra-base hit, a double in the ninth inning.
  • James Tibbs III was intentionally walked in the third inning, his second of the year. Tibbs leads FSU with 23 walks (Cam Smith, the next closest Seminole has 8, including one Friday); Tibbs has reached safely in 15 straight games and in 64 of 67 career starts.
  • Florida State tied its season high with eight walks drawn.
  • Colton Vincent threw out his fifth attempted steal this season.
