TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 29/23 Florida State cross country teams will open the 2023 season by racing at the Firetower Project Run in Boone, N.C. on Friday at the Don Kennedy Trails at State Farm.
The women's 5k will start at 4 p.m. and the men's 8k will follow at 4:45 p.m. Live timing will be available.
"We're really excited to kick off the 2023 season," FSU men's head coach Bob Braman said. "We will race our best 13 guys and see how we stack up against previous openers at State Farm Fields. It's been a long time since we've had this much quality depth, and it makes us excited for the opportunities that lie ahead."
The USTFCCCA released its preseason polls on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both teams were listed third in the South Region on Tuesday. On Wednesday, the women came in at No. 23 in the national poll, while the men are 29th.
The ACC also released its order of finish on Thursday. The women were selected fifth in the league (146), while the men were chosen seventh (139).
The men return Cooper Schroeder, who earned All-Region honors in 2022. Schroeder will be joined by David Mullarkey, who finished 19th at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 5,000m (14:28.89). He will be running his first XC season.
The Seminoles will also look to Abdirizak Ibrahim and Ahmed Ibrahim, who have NCAA Championship experience under their belts.
"As Coach Braman mentioned, we are thrilled to start the 2023 cross country season," FSU women's head cross country coach Cody Halsey said. "Between a lot of talented upperclassmen, transfers, and new freshmen, we are excited to get our first hard effort in. Based on the last few weeks of work with these ladies, we're excited to see where we are."
The women's team returns Alyson Churchill and Agnes McTighe, who captured All-Region honors in 2022 before leading the Seminoles to an 18th place finish at the NCAA Championships. Both Churchill and McTighe finished within the top 100 runners, becoming the 45th and 46th Noles in program history to accomplish the feat.
Rebecca Bergnes and Caitlin Wilkey were also among the Noles in the NCAA race last season in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
