TALLAHASSEE – The No. 20 Florida State men's tennis team began the season spotless, sweeping Mercer and Jacksonville State in a doubleheader Saturday at the FSU Indoor Tennis Facility.

"I thought it was a good first day of playing, winning all 12 singles matches we played today and winning the four doubles that we completed," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said. "I thought Azariah in the first match was impressive to close out while Justin took two wins on the day, showing that the freshmen can really contribute. Yusef handled both matches fairly easily, Jamie earned a couple of wins, and Alex Bulte did really well on the day too."

Florida State earned its first point of the season as the freshmen pairing of Justin Lyons and Azariah Rusher took the first match convincingly while the French duo of Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif handled the opposition.

The 97th-ranked singles player in the country Jamie Connel and fellow junior Alex Bulte dominated as they each only dropped one of their 13 games en route to wins. Azariah Rusher made quick work in his spring singles debut to earn the match-winning point while Youcef Rihane blanked Samuel MacLeod in the second set. Justin Lyons used two 6-3 sets to power through while Loris Pourroy battled well with Nemanja Stefanovic and came out victorious.

The success carried into the second match as the Seminoles faced Jacksonville State and kept the foot on the gas with two victories to take the doubles point. Connel and Bulte notched their second doubles victory early before one of the top duos in the country, Loris Pourroy and Rihane sealed the round.

Cornut-Chauvinc and Rihane dominated in their singles matches as they only dropped five games in their play while Dous-Karpenschif played proficiently to win his match.

Connel secured himself a victory after fighting off a late run by Alin Fatu while Lyons came back after dropping the first set 0-6 and crushed the remainder of the match 6-1, 6-2. Alex Bulte also fell in the first set but fought to go to a third set and pulled away in the third-set tiebreaker.

"I thought the energy was really good and it just prepares us for what we have we got it really tough stretch here," Hultquist said.

Florida State leaves the first day with a 2-0 record and will now head to Mississippi State for a Friday afternoon match at 2:00 p.m. before traveling to Alabama at noon on Sunday. Live stats and live video are expected to be available on Seminoles.com.
