Season Ends with Home Defeat

11/30/2024 11:04:00 PM | Football

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State football team concluded the 2024 season with a 31-11 loss to Florida on Saturday night at Doak Campbell Stadium.

The in-state rivalry game was Senior Day, where Florida State's senior class was recognized on the field before the game.

FSU had 239 yards of total offense, 140 passing and 99 rushing. UF had 368 yards offensively, 235 on the ground and 133 through the air. The Seminoles did not commit a penalty that was accepted for the first time since 2010.

Running back Lawrance Toafili ran for a touchdown, the 15th of his career and third in 2024, and led the team in both rushing and receiving yards, with 43 and 39, respectively. He was second on the team with nine carries and caught three passes, second-most on the team.

Quarterback Luke Kromenhoek had a career-best 15 pass completions on 28 attempts for 140 yards. He added 32 yards rushing on a career-high 21 attempts, with a long run of 15 yards.

Wide receiver Ja'Khi Douglas led the team with four catches and totaled 33 yards.

Defensively, the Seminoles had 63 total tackles, 6.0 for a loss with three sacks, and an interception. FSU has at least 5.0 tackles for loss in 11 consecutive games, the team's longest stretch since a 12-game streak in 2013.

Linebacker Omar Graham Jr. led the team with 7.0 tackles, one shy of tying his career high, and he notched a team-high-tying five solo tackles. His 1.5 tackles for loss are a career best. Defensive lineman Joshua Farmer posted a career-high 1.5 sacks with 3.0 total tackles.

Defensive back Azareye'h Thomas also had five solo tackles and picked off a pass in the end zone in the second quarter. It was his third career takeaway, and second interception, along with a pick in 2022 and a fumble recovery last season. Thomas' 6.0 total tackles tie a career high.

Lou Groza Award finalist Ryan Fitzgerald converted a 39-yard field goal on Florida State's first drive of the second half. He finishes the season a perfect 13-for-13, leading the country in successful field goals without a miss. Fitzgerald is one make shy of tying the longest successful field goal streak to begin a season in program history, behind Roberto Aguayo's 14 in a row to begin 2014.

Fitzgerald's field goal was the 58th of his career, which continues to be No. 7 on FSU's all-time list.

Also on Saturday, punter Alex Mastromanno appeared in his 59th game at FSU, the most in school history. He surpassed Camren McDonald and Leonard Warner III, who played in 58 games for Florida State from 2018-22 and 2017-22, respectively.

Mastromanno had five punts for an average of 51.4 yards, with two of 50-plus yards, including one that went 62 yards. He continues to lead the country in both punting average (49.3) and punts of 50-plus yards (30).

With the loss, the Seminoles (2-10) saw their two-game win streak against the Gators (7-5) come to an end.

Florida took a 7-0 lead with 2:28 left in the first quarter on a 13-yard touchdown run. The score came one play after the Gators forced a fumble on a sack.

The FSU defense forced a punt on UF's next drive, and Thomas' interception in the end zone with 5:28 left in the first half thwarted another Gator drive that had reached the Seminole 21-yard line.

The Gators extended their lead to 14-0 on a touchdown with 25 seconds remaining in the half. The four-yard pass for the score capped a nine-play, 80-yard drive.

A three-and-out began the second half for the Florida State defense, and the offense turned that into its first points of the day thanks to Fitzgerald's field goal. The nine-play drive was aided by an 11-yard run by Toafili and a 10-yard pass from Kromenhoek to Toafili.

With 9:47 left in the third quarter, the Seminoles had cut the deficit to 14-3.

Florida added a field goal of its own with the help of a turnover at the FSU 12, and it was 17-3 with 6:27 remaining in the quarter.

The Seminoles proceeded to then drive 68 yards on 13 plays to the UF three. However, a fumble on second-and-goal turned the ball over.

Six plays into UF's ensuing 93-yard drive, the Gators scored on a 65-yard run. The touchdown made it 24-3 just over two minutes into the fourth quarter.

FSU's defense forced a three-and-out on Florida's next possession, and the Seminoles got the ball back on their own 41-yard line.

That set up an 11-play, 59-yard drive that took 4:01 and ended with a two-yard touchdown run by Toafili. The score was set up by a 20-yard completion from Kromenhoek to tight end Landen Thomas, and the drive also featured a nine-yard rush by Toafili and an 11-yard pass from Kromenhoek to Douglas.

Florida State then converted the two-point conversion, thanks to Toafili's two-yard rush. With 3:25 left in the game, it was 24-11.

The Seminoles were unsuccessful on an onside kick attempt. The Gators used the short field to go 51 yards for a touchdown with 2:05 remaining to make it 31-11, which proved to be the final score for either team in the contest.
