Herbet, Clark Pace Noles on Day Two of ACC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. –  The No. 16/RV Florida State swimming and diving teams were paced by student-athletes Kayleigh Clark and Mason Herbet on the second day of the 2024 ACC Swimming and Diving Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

Clark competed in the women's 1-meter diving final, while Herbet swam in the top heat of men's 200 IM after swimming the 200 free relay.

The 16th-ranked men's team started the night off with a big swim in the 200 free relay, touching at 1:15.81 for fifth place behind the team of Peter Varjasi, Mason Herbet, Max Wilson, and Jokubas Keblys. The squad took off over seven tenths of a second from their seed time (1:16.54), which already secured an NCAA bid.

Herbet reloaded and swam in his first ACC Championship heat of the 200 IM, touching fifth at 1:43.05 after placing sixth out of the heats behind a new best time (1:43.52). His performance at finals ranks second in FSU history.

"Mason was a bright spot for us today," FSU head coach Neal Studd said. "He was big part of that relay and he had an excellent 200 IM. It was great to see our senior captain step up in that way. We had some good swims, but the work needs to be done in the morning and we'll look to do that tomorrow. We have a great team spirit and we're excited to be back at it."

Plagued by injuries during her four-year FSU career, Clark qualified for the 1-meter final at her first ACC's in seventh place at 268.10.

At night, Clark scored above 40 points on four of her dives, holding her place with a score of 252.20 for seventh.

"I could not be more proud of Kayleigh," FSU head diving coach John Proctor said. "The road she's traveled with injuries all the way back to freshman year would be funny if it wasn't so tragic. This is her first ACCs and she's only been able to train for a few months. She has worked her butt off as much as her body would allow and has kept her mind right for four years. I'm super proud of her."

In addition to Herbet, Tommaso Baravelli swam his personal best in prelims of the 200 IM at 1:44.72, touching 12th ahead of Max Wilson in 14th (1:44.77).  In the consolation heat, Wilson touched 13th (1:44.80) just ahead of Baravelli in 14th (1:45.80). Baravelli's prelim time ranks sixth in FSU history.

Yordan Yanchev qualified 10th out of the heats in prelims in the 500 free, touching at 4:18.48.  At night, Yanchev led the consolation heat from wire-to-wire, touching at 4:16.25 for ninth.

Jonathan Edwards also added 22nd place points, finishing at 4:24.23 after posting 4:22.82 in prelims.

Florida State placed four swimmers  in the 50 free finals, led by Varjasi, who secured a spot in the consolation heat after a finished second three-way swim-off at 19.34. Keblys took third at 19.49 after posting his best in the prelims at 19.41.

Varjasi moved up to 14th in finals, touching at 19.42 after Keblys led a first, second, and third place bonus heat with at time of 19.41.  Tobias Schulrath followed in 18th (19.58) after posting his best in prelims at 19.51 ahead of Sam Bork at 19.62 in 19th. Bork also contributed his best in the morning at 19.55.

Keblys' 19.41 ties the ninth-fastest in FSU history.

Jenny Halden led the way for the Noles in the women's 50 free in prelims, touching behind a season best of 22.69 for 23rd.  Halden moved up one spot, touching at 22.79 for 22nd.

In addition to Clark, three other Noles scored points towards the team total. Samantha Vear placed ninth (255.45) ahead of Jessica Buntman (232.70) in 18th. Izzy Gregersen was 23rd at 224.95.

The men are in fifth place with a total of 292 while the women are eighth (217).

Prelims on Thursday will start at 9:30 a.m. and will feature the 400 IM, 100 fly and 200 free. The top 24 swimmers in each event will advance to three heats of finals, scoring points for the team. Finals will start at 5:30 p.m.

Men's 3-meter diving will begin at 1 p.m. with the top eight divers from prelims advancing to finals.
