LOUISVILLE, Ky. –The No. 17 Florida State men's tennis team outlasted Louisville on the road to earn its 10th win of the season and recorded its fifth victory away from home.
"We earned a tough, hard-fought win up here and I'm really proud of Jamie [Connel] and Alex [Bulte] for the clutch doubles win that came up huge," head coach Dwayne Hultquist said.
The doubles round was tense as Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif dropped only their second match all season to UL's 20th-ranked pair of Donnet and Rodrigues.
The two remaining courts responded as Youcef Rihane and Loris Pourroy dominated their match to win 6-2 while Jamie Connel and Alex Bulte clinched the opening point with a 6-4 win on Court 3.
Cornut-Chauvinc bounced back immediately as he firmly controlled his singles match with a straight-sets victory 6-2, 6-3. The No. 13 singles player in the country earned his fifth top-50 win of the season, while improving to 10-0.
Connel and Louisville tied the match at 2-2 with straight-set wins on Court 4 and Court 3 before Court 6 stole the momentum from Louisville. Bulte navigated through two difficult sets but emerged victorious 6-4, 7-5 to retake the lead with third sets necessary to decide the match.
Dous-Karpenschif and Pourroy were each locked at one set heading into the final frame and embraced the pressure. Dous-Karpenschif traded games with his opponent before serving an ace to clinch the match-winning point. Pourroy was leading 4-1 before the match was left unfinished.
Florida State finishes the first weekend of conference play with a meeting at Notre Dame. The match against the Fighting Irish is set to begin on Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Eck Tennis Pavilion and will stream on ACC Network Extra.
