AUSTIN, TEXAS - No. 9 seed Florida State Women's Basketball prepares for its NCAA First Round matchup vs. No. 8 seed Alabama on Friday at 5:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. CT at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas. The game will air on ESPN2 with Tiffany Greene (play-by-play) and Jimmy Dykes (color) on the call.
FSU continues its long active streak of NCAA Tournament appearances, now reaching 11 consecutive seasons. FSU is one of eight programs to reach the Big Dance in every year since 2013, joining Baylor, Louisville, Maryland, South Carolina, Stanford, Tennessee and UConn.
The Seminoles (23-10) are coming off a run to the ACC Semifinals, defeating Wake Forest in the second round (70-53) and taking down third-seeded Syracuse (78-65) in the quarterfinals. Sophomore Ta'Niya Latson and junior Makayla Timpson, the team's two co-captains, both were named to the ACC All-Tournament Second Team. Both are also All-ACC First Team performers.
FSU is a No. 9 seed for just the second time in program history, with the other season happening in 2021 when it faced eighth-seeded Oregon State in the "bubble" setup in San Antonio. FSU is making its 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance and its 18th in the last 19 seasons, joining only Louisville and Notre Dame among ACC schools who carry such a long streak.
Timpson is having the best season by a post player in FSU history. She already holds the school single-season record for double-doubles (17), is tied for the most blocked shots in a season (84) and is three rebounds away from establishing the program record as well (she has 330, trailing former player Adut Bulgak's 332 boards in the 2014-15 season).
Timpson is trying to become the third Seminole ever to average a double-double in a season. The last player to do it was Levys Torres in the 2000-01 season, which was head coach Brooke Wyckoff's senior year at FSU.
Wyckoff has guided FSU to consecutive 12-6 seasons in ACC play and owns a 33-19 career record in conference play in her three seasons at the helm, including her interim year in 2020-21. It is FSU's first back-to-back seasons with 12 or more wins in ACC play since the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.
Latson is 31 points away from establishing the single-season FSU record, which is currently 710 points by Austin, Texas, resident Sue Galkantas. Latson enters the NCAAs with 680 points this year - second-most in program history.
FSU is 5-5 all-time vs. Alabama (23-9), with the last meeting on Nov. 26, 2010, in a 68-61 win by the Seminoles at the Junkanoo Jam in The Bahamas. FSU's last trip to Austin, Texas, was in a road game against the Longhorns on Dec. 17, 2017.
FSU is 2-1 vs. SEC opponents this season, owning a home win vs. Tennessee (92-91), a road win at Florida (79-75) and a home loss to Arkansas (58-71).
