Florida State Sweeps UNC Asheville In First Round of NCAA Tournament

Athens, Georgia – The No. 20 Florida State women's tennis team (17-8) swept UNC Asheville (16-4) 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at the Lindsey Hopkins Tennis Facility in Athens, Georgia. 

Due to inclement weather, the start of the match was delayed two hours and was moved indoors. 

The Seminoles kicked off the match with a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles by the nation's 17th-ranked duo of Vic Allen and Millie Bissett. Laura Putz and Cade Cricchio clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 3 to give FSU the 1-0 lead. 

Freshman Eva Shaw dominated as she won 6-0, 6-1 against Valeria Dickson at No. 6 singles to extend the lead to 2-0. 

Anna Arkadianou extended the lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Alexis Nyborg at No. 3 singles.

Allen, ranked 21st nationally in signles, clinched the match as she defeated Linge Steenkamp 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 to give the Seminoles the 4-0 sweep. Ellie Schoppe was up 6-0, 5-4 when the match was concluded, and Bissett was up 7-5, 3-2.

Florida State advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for a seventh consecutive appearance and will face the winner of No. 7 Georgia and Alabama State on Saturday at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Seminoles.com.
