Carson Dorsey Leads Noles in Regional Opener vs. Stetson

5/31/2024 4:23:00 PM | Baseball

TALLAHASSEE – Starting pitcher Carson Dorsey lifted 1-seed Florida State (43-15) past 4-seed Stetson (40-21) in the Tallahassee Regional opener Friday afternoon, a 7-2 Seminole victory. Dorsey threw a career-high 8.2 innings – the most for a Seminole since 2018 – and allowed just one earned run with seven strikeouts. The Dick Howser Stadium crowd of 4,153 gave the junior multiple standing ovations, culminating in a hat-tip after his 121st and final pitch.

Brennen Oxford needed just three pitches to strike out Yohann Dessureault to end the game, FSU's fourth consecutive Regional-opening victory.

Florida State improved to 7-2 in Dorsey's nine starts this season. The junior college transfer from Panama City is now 6-4 on the season.

After a 1-2-3 first inning from Dorsey, Max Williams hit a lead-off home run in the bottom of the inning against former Seminole Dylan Jacobs (1-2), his 10th of the season and second lead-off homer. Daniel Cantu followed with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning, his eighth of the year.

Stetson got on the board on the strength of three hits, but an RBI double ended with Jaime Ferrer throwing out Kyle Jones at the plate as the tying run. Ferrer hit an RBI single in the bottom of the inning to get the run back.

The noon start and overhead sun caused havoc for both teams, with Alex Lodise scoring two runs on a high fly that Stetson lost in left field, while the Hatters' second run came when FSU could not field a pop-up from Gio Cueto.

FSU added two more runs in the seventh inning, loading the bases with no outs before an RBI groundout from Cantu and a sacrifice fly from Lodise.

Dorsey powered through his previous high of 6.0 innings pitched, returning for the seventh and eighth innings to raucous cheers from the Howser faithful. Dorsey needed just six pitches to get out of the eighth inning and was pulled from the game only after a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth.
