7/27/2024 4:02:00 PM | Men's Basketball
TALLAHASSEE – For the second consecutive year, 10 members of the Florida State Men's Basketball Team have been named to the 2024 ACC Academic Honor Roll including returning All-ACC selection Jamir Watkins. Watkins, who is the Seminoles' leading returning scorer and rebounder, was named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll along with Cam Corhen, Cam'Ron Fletcher, Jaylan Gainey, Darin Green Jr., Tom House, Jesse Jones, Baba Miller, Isaac Spainhour, and Max Thorpe.
Watkins, one of the nation's top returning guard for the 2024-25 season, returns to compete in his second season as a Seminole. It marked Watkins's first appearance on the ACC Academic Honor Roll for the senior guard who averaged a team-high 15.6 pints and a team high 6.0 rebounds during the 2023-24 season. Watkins was named to the 2024 All-ACC Academic Men's Basketball Team and earned academic Dean's List honors during the spring of 2024.
Two Seminoles – Spainhour and Thorpe – were named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll for the fourth time in their careers. Spainhour earned his bachelor' degree in sport management on May 3, 2024 while Thorpe earned his degree in sport management in August of 2023. Thorpe will earn his MBA from Florida State during summer commencement exercises on August 2, 2024.
"The success of our players in the classroom is one of the things that is very important to our program," said Head Coach Leonard Hamilton. "To have 20 players named to the ACC Honor Roll in the last two seasons requires a phenomenal commitment by each of our honored players not only academically, but in everything they do to stay disciplined in their daily lives."
Of the 10 players who were named to the 2024 ACC Academic Honor Roll, five (Gainey, Green Jr., Jones, Spainhour, Thorpe) have already degrees from Florida State. Gainey will second master's degree, while Thorpe will earn his first master's degree to add to the bachelor's degree he earned in 2023 – both on August 2, 2024.
Gainey will have earned three degrees by the end of the summer of 2024. He earned his bachelor's degree in Business Economics from Brown University in 2002, a master's degree in Athletic Coaching in 2023 and will earn his second master's degree in sport management on August 2.
"Florida State is a fabulous educational institution," said Gainey. "I am very proud to say that I have earned two degrees from FSU which will help me tremendously as I move into the business world. The professors I have had the opportunity to learn from have afforded me the experiences and knowledge that will put me at the top of the class as I finish my time as a college student. Coming to Florida State has been a blessing for me and my family. I wouldn't trade my graduate experience for any other college in the country."
Five Seminoles earned their way onto the ACC Academic Honor Roll for the first time in their careers Including Corhen (social science), Fletcher (social science), Green Jr. (social science), House (political science), Jones (finance), and Watkins (social science).
With seven players from the basketball team who have graduated from Florida State in 2023 and 2024, Hamilton has guided more that 97 percent of his four-year players to earn their degrees during his first 22 seasons as Florida State's Head Coach.
The ACC Academic Honor Roll consists of student-athletes who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better for the full academic year. The conference recognized a record 6,187 student-athletes for their hard work in the classroom.
