Record-Tying Seven Noles to Compete at Olympics

TALLAHASSEE – Two more swimmers with ties to the Florida State swimming and diving teams were selected to represent their countries for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Rising junior Max Wilson will make his Olympic debut for the U.S. Virgin Islands, while Ida Hulkko is set to for her second trip for Finland.
Wilson and Hulkko will join Max McCusker (Ireland), Gloria Muzito (Uganda), Peter Varjasi (Germany), Emma Terebo and Julio Horrego (Honduras) in Paris. Seven Seminoles selected to a single Olympics ties the program record that was set in 2000.
A 2024 NCAA qualifier, Wilson broke the FSU record in the men's 100 back at 45.24. He was a two-time second-team All-American in 2024 as a part of the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay, which also set the program record at the NCAA Championships.
Wilson finished sixth in the 100 back (45.58) at the ACC Championships and is ranked in the FSU all-time top 10 in three events (100 back, 200 back, 200 IM).
Following his rookie season in 2022-23, Wilson won the Most Improved award and in 2023-24, he was selected as the Hardest Worker at the end of the year.
Wilson has represented his country internationally since 2019, including three World Aquatics Championships. Wilson won gold I the 50-meter back (25.54) and 100 back (55.15) at the Central American and Caribbean Swimming Championships in 2024.
Hulkko competed for FSU in 2018-19 before turning professional. She was the 2019 ACC bronze medalist in the 100 breast before earning All-American honors in the race after placing fifth at the NCAA Championships.
At the 2020 Olympics, Hulkko competed in the semifinal of the 100 breast, touching 12th at 1:07.02 after she swam her best at 1:06.19 in prelims.
A total of 30 athletes with ties to the program have made the Olympics, representing 23 different countries since 1972. The Seminoles have been represented at every Games since 1996 and also contributed athletes in 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1988.
The swimming portion of the Olympics will start on July 27 at the Paris La Defense Arena.
