TALLAHASSEE – During the 20th anniversary of the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, a Florida State graduate nearly brought the team championship back to Memphis.
Jason March, a team manager for the Seminoles under Head Coach Leonard Hamilton and Associate Head Coach Stan Jones, led the Memphis Grizzlies to the championship game of the NBA Summer league earlier this month. The Grizzlies lost to the Miami Heat, 120-118, in overtime on July 22, at the Thomas and Mack Center. March coached the Grizzlies into a 113-113 tied in regulation, but the heat were two points better than Memphis in overtime and brought the championship to South Beach.
Prior to the start of the summer league competition, March was named to the Grizzlies' coaching staff after five seasons and more than 100 G-League victories as the head coach of the Memphis Hustle. The coach of the Hustle since 2019, he became just the second active G-League coach to reach 100 victories.
Prior to his Summer League experience, March was elevated from the head coach of the Hustle to an assistant coaching position with Grizzlies. He was credited by the Grizzlies' ownership group with playing a significant role in the development of a number of key Grizzlies who helped the team advance to the NBA playoffs in two of the last three seasons.
"It's been a crazy month for sure," March told Seminoles.com. "We had an incredible run in Summer League and a really tough finish. I was, and have been very fortunate, to work with some great players and staff."
March was one of five Seminoles who participated the NBA summer league with former Seminoles John Butler Jr. (Washington Wizards), Trent Forrest (Los Angeles Lakers), Darin Green Jr (San Antonio Spurs) and Malik Osborne (Phoenix Suns) also displaying their talents in Las Vegas.
Butler enjoyed his best game of the summer as a starter in the Wizards' 91-79 win over the Milwaukee Bucks. As a starter, he played 34 minutes, scored 13 points and had five rebounds and five assists. He was five-of-15 (.333 percent) from the field, including three-of-10 (.300 percent) from the 3-point line. He also totaled five assists, two steals, and one blocked shot.
Forrest, who has played in the NBA for four seasons spending time between the Utah Jazz and Atlanta Hawks, averaged 19.2 minutes played in two games in Las Vegas.
Green Jr. helped lead San Antonio to a 4-1 record as he averaged 6.0 points in two games played for the Spurs. In a 100-89 Spurs' win over Toronto, Green Jr. scored 12 points in 16 minutes of playing time. He was four-of-nine (.444 percent) from the field, including four-of-eight (.500 percent) from the 3-point line. He added two rebounds and one assist in the victory.
Osborne played in three games for the Suns who finished Summer League play with a 2-3 record. He averaged 1.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 4.9 minutes played. Osborne scored three points (on a 3-point shot) and pulled two rebounds for Phoenix against the Golden State Warriors.
