SUNNINGDALE, England – Florida State's Lottie Woad secured two points and the Great Britain and Ireland team defeated the United States, 11-9, to win the 43rd Curtis Cup at Sunningdale Golf Club. Woad and Seminole Hall of Famer Karen Stupples – an assistant captain – were members of the victorious team who returned the Curtis Cup to the GBI team for the first time since 2016.
Woad is a four-time All-American at Florida State and winner of the 2024 Augusta National Women's Amateur tournament. She made her first appearance in the prestigious Curtis Cup against the United States.
Woad finished with a 1-1-2 record for 2.0 points earned as a member of the GB&I Team.
Woad teamed with Sara Byrne and faced Catherine Park and Asterisk Talley of the United States in the Friday Foursomes competition with the match ending in a draw. Woad and Byrne were three down after nine holes to Park and Talley, but won five of the next six holes – birding four of them – to move two up with three holes to play. The exhilarating run from the GB&I pair featured a near-ace for Woad on the 15th, where her tee shot came to rest a foot from the hole.
Woad played with Byrne in the Friday Fourballs competition for a 2&1 win against the United States' Park and Zoe Campos. Her point in the Fourballs competition tied the overall match at 3-3. In the Saturday Foursomes with Byrne, she halved her match against the United States' Melanie Green and Rachel Kuehn. The decision tied at 4.5-4.5 after three rounds heading into the Saturday Fourball event. Woad continued to play as an undefeated member of the GB&I team in the Saturday Fourballs competition as she played with Byrne again and halved their match against Kuehn and Megan Schofill of the United States.
Woad and Byrne became the first duo to be undefeated in all four opening matches since the Curtis Cup changed its format in 2008. The GB&I team led the U.S. team by a 7-5 score after two days of play.
"What an exciting finish," said GB&I captain Catriona Matthew. "Hats off to the Americans; it takes two teams. There was some fantastic golf all three days. It was a spectacle for women's golf. The golf this week really was quite amazing. The future of women's golf is in good hands for both teams. It was a great contest, you love these to be close; it makes it exciting for all the fans."
