Louis and Filimaua Have Career Nights to Lead FSU Past Owls

9/13/2024 8:34:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

TALLAHASSEE - The No. 21 Florida State volleyball team (6-1) kicked off the Seminole Classic with a sweep (25-23, 25-14, 26-24) against Florida Atlantic (5-3) on Friday night in front of a sold-out crowd at Tully Gym. Friday was the first meeting between the in-state foes since 2019, and FSU kept its unbeaten streak alive against the Owls improving to 11-0 all time.

The Seminoles held similar standings with the Owls during the beginning of the first set, but FSU used a 7-1 run to jump ahead 16-11. The Owls continued to chip away, and eventually tied the set at 22. The Owls had a chance to take the lead, but an attacking error gave the point to the Noles. Taylor Head put down a big kill to get the Noles to set point. The Owls responded with a kill of their own, but Khori Louis slammed the ball into the floor to give the Noles the first set.

The second set saw FSU take control early on, and they ran away with the set with some more great offense as they were hitting .491 through two sets.

Set three began with multiple back and forth points with both teams unable to find a rhythm. Florida Atlantic gained some momentum with a 6-1 run to take a 13-9 lead. The Owls took a 15-13 lead into the media timeout, but back-to-back kills from Louis tied the set, and Head gave the Noles the lead. The two teams traded points, but the Owls used a 3-1 spurt to take a 21-19 lead. FSU responded with a 3-0 run of its own thanks to kills from Louis and Filimaua to take the lead. Both teams saw its fair share of errors, but with the set tied at 24, Louis and Filimaua capped off their career nights with back-to-back kills to end the match.

Louis had a game-high 15 kills on 23 attempts (.609) which tied her career high. Louis also contributed eight blocks which was one shy of her career high. Filimaua had a career high in both kills (14) and hitting percentage (.520) while also leading the team with nine digs. Head also had a solid night offensively with 10 kills on 25 attempts (.400). Loren Robertson led the way by dishing out 28 assists to go with seven digs.

FSU continues the Seminole Classic weekend with a matchup against UCF on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be watched live on ACCNX.
