Watkins Leads Florida State With 20; Seminoles Fall At Stanford, 78-71

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Stanford's Oziyah Sellers scored a game-high 27 points and the homestanding Cardinal held off a late charge by Florida State to gain a 78-71 win over the Seminoles at Maples Pavilion. Sellers made four of Stanford's 11 3-point shots – and 10 field goals overall -- as the Cardinal improved to 11-1 at home with the victory.
Florida State is now 13-7 and 4-5 in ACC play. Stanford, which is playing its first season in the ACC, improved to 14-6 overall and 6-3 in the ACC.
Stanford took control of the game with a 9-0 run midway through the first half. The Cardinal trailed the Seminoles by a 10-9 margin prior to the start of the run, and led 18-10 at the end of the run as they held Florida State scoreless for more than five minutes.
Florida State matched Stanford point-for-point during the remainder of the half, but trailed 33-25 at the intermission. The Seminoles trailed at the intermission despite holding the Cardinal to .406 shooting from the field, forcing the Cardinal into six turnovers and holding the ACC's leading scorer and rebounder, Maxime Raynaud, to four points and six rebounds.
The Seminoles' swarming defense held Raynaud to eight points and 14 rebounds – the first time this season he has not scored in double-figures -- for the game.
Wearing their special turquoise Heritage uniforms for the third time this season, the Seminoles rallied in the second half but were never able to seize control on the scoreboard.
Jamir Watkins led the Seminoles in almost every statistical category as he scored 20 points, pulled down eight rebounds, earned two assists and recorded two steals. Watkins was relentless offensively as he made eight field goals, two 3-point field goals, and two free throws.
Malique Ewin was Florida State's second-leading scorer with 16 points. He made 10 of 12 free throws in reaching double figure scoring for the 17th consecutive game. He pulled down seven rebounds, and led the Seminoles with three assists.
Watkins and Ewin have now scored in double figures in 17 consecutive games – each Seminole game since November 15 and in all of Florida State's nine ACC games. Watkins has now scored in double figures against each of the current teams in the ACC.
Christian Nitu gained valuable time playing for nine minutes in the game, bringing intensity to the court with a career-high of five rebounds and scoring five points. Two of his five points came on an athletic tip-in.
Daquan Davis continued to score the ball well as he was the third of three Seminoles in double-figure scoring with 14 points. He has now scored in double-figures in six games this season.
