TALLAHASSEE - Florida State junior Eva Shaw concluded her fall season in the Round of 32 at the NCAA Singles Championships at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
Shaw earned a Round of 64 victory in her NCAA debut, defeating Louise Wikander of Denver 6-4, 6-3.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair. Shaw won the first game, then broke Wikander on a deciding point in the second to take a 2-0 lead. Wikander answered by winning the next two games to even the set at 2-2.
Another deciding point game followed in the fifth, which Shaw won for a 3-2 advantage. Wikander again pulled level at 4-4 before Shaw broke serve for the second time in the set to lead 5-4. Shaw went on to close out the set 6-4.
Set two began very similarly to the first, with Shaw earning a 2-1 lead through the first three games. Shaw would not let Wikander tie the set, going up 3-2 before switching sides. Shaw would go on to win three of the final four games to earn a straight-set 6-4, 6-3 victory to advance to the Round of 32.
In the Round of 32, Shaw matched up with No. 21-ranked Carmen Andreea Herea of Texas.
Shaw took an early 2-1 lead in the first set before Herea won the next three games. Trailing 4-2, Shaw won the following game to cut the deficit to 4-3. Herea then won the next two games to win the first set 6-3.
For the first time in her first four NCAA Tournament sets, Shaw dropped the opening game before winning the second. The two traded games and were tied 3-3 until Shaw won back-to-back games to take a 4-3 lead. Herea would answer to tie the second set at 4-4. Shaw won the ninth game to take a 5-4 advantage, but Herea would close out the set in the next three games to win the match 6-3, 7-5.
Shaw was the first FSU women's tennis player to qualify for the NCAA Singles Championships since the individual championship tournament was moved to the fall in 2024. The Seminoles begin the team portion of their schedule in January.
