Williams Scores 18 points, Noles Fall to Illinois

TALLAHASSEEÂ - Florida State women's basketball (3-4) fell to Illinois (4-1) by a final score of 86-63 on Sunday evening at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.Â

Junior guard Sole Williams led the team, scoring 18 points and sinking four three-point shots. Senior guard Sydney Bowles and junior center Pania Davis each finished with nine points, and graduate forward Allie Kubek led with seven rebounds. Bowles and junior forward Avery Treadwell each added a block.

Florida State started with a strong offensive push in the first quarter. Three different Seminoles worked the paint while Bowles fired a three for an initial 14-3 scoring run through the first four minutes. Emma Risch and Amaya Bonner each added triples to help hold off a late surge by the Fighting Illini, who cut down the deficit to two points. Florida State led 24-22 after the first 10 minutes of play.

Williams opened the second quarter early with a triple, but Illinois kept FSU off the board, finding momentum in driving the lane with insurance from several threes. Florida State trailed 42-34 at the conclusion of the first half.

Heading to the locker room, Bowles and Davis led the offense with seven points each followed by Kubek with six points and five different Seminoles contributed threes. Kubek spearheaded the rebounding effort with five boards as well as one assist.

Out of the half, the Seminoles pulled within five points 46-41, after Davis and Williams converted drives to the basket in addition to Treadwell hitting two free throws. Illinois would pull away at the end for a 61-49 lead going into the final 10 minutes.

Williams was a bright spot in the fourth quarter, sinking three three-pointers in the final three minutes of the game.Â

Florida State will travel south to Fort Myers, Fla. to face off against Missouri State in the GEICO Coconut Hoops tournament on Friday, Nov. 28. The game will stream on FloCollege at 4 p.m. They will play either Coppin State or No. 8 Oklahoma on Sunday, Nov. 30.Â
