Watkins Totals 23 in Loss To No. 22/25 Louisville

LOUISVILLE, KY. – Jamir Watkins scored a team-high 23 points – including 12 as Florida State outscored Louisville 50-44 in the second half – but the Seminoles fell to No. 22/25 Louisville by an 89-81 margin at the KFC YUM! Center. The Seminoles nearly rallied from a 20-point deficit and trimmed their deficit to six on three occasions in the final 11 minutes of the game before falling on the road in ACC play.

The Seminoles are now 16-11 overall and 7-9 in ACC play. Louisville is now 21-6 and 14-2 in ACC play.

Florida State began its comeback to begin the second half as it scored 10 of the first 17 points to cut its deficit to 11 at 52-41. The Seminoles then scored five of the next seven points to cut their deficit to seven at 54-47. A 3-point shot by Jerry Deng allowed the Seminoles to get within six at 64-58 with 10:22 remaining to be played. The Seminoles later trailed by only six at 66-60 with 8:58 left before the Cardinals closed the game on a 23-21 run to gain the victory.

The Seminoles fought themselves back into the game in the second half as they committed only two turnovers, shot .606 from the field (20 of 33), .778 from the free throw line (seven of nine), made three 3-point shots, and outscored the Cardinals by a 50-44 margin.

Florida State limited the Cardinals to a .458 field goal shooting percentage (11 of 24), a .222 3-point field goal shooting percentage (two of nine), outscored the home team 7-2 on points off of turnovers,  and outscored Louisville 28-18 on points in paint in the second half as it worked itself back into the game.

Watkins' total of 23 points allowed him to surpass the 1,000 career point mark as a Seminole. He became the 11th fastest player in school history to reach the milestone as he moved past the coveted milestone in the second half.  He has now scored 1,003 career points at Florida State.

Earlier this week in Florida State's victory over Miami, Watkins surpassed the 1,500 point mark for his career. He has now scored 1,525 career points.

Malique Ewin totaled 19 points and nine rebounds as he missed earning his 10th career double-double by one rebound. The junior also totaled two assists and two steals.

Ewin was nine of 10 from the field and has made 19 of his last 20 field goal attempts in the last two games.  He is the ACC leader in field goal percentage.

Freshman Daquan Davis totaled 10 points and was one of three Seminoles in double figure scoring. Davis also added a team-high three steals.

The Seminoles, who lead the ACC in both blocked shots and steals, totaled three blocked shots and seven steals.  

Chucky Hepburn scored a game-high 29 points and J'Vonne Hadley recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead Louisville.

Florida State plays host to North Carolina on Monday night at the Donald L. Tucker Center with the game tipping off at 7:00 p.m.
