TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State redshirt junior left-handed starter Joey Volini has been named the Dick Howser Trophy National Pitcher of the Month, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced on Tuesday.
Volini is a unanimous selection for the national monthly honor for March. It is the first of his career and comes after a stellar month on the mound. In his first season as a Seminole, Volini is the first FSU player to be recognized with NCBWA's National Player of the Month honors since Parker Messick earned pitching accolades in May, 2022.
Making five starts and going a perfect 5-0 in March, Volini posted a 1.09 ERA with two complete games. In 33.0 innings, he allowed four earned runs on 18 hits with 50 strikeouts and seven walks. He held opponents to a .165 batting average.
A Tampa, Florida, native, Volini tossed seven-inning complete games in back-to-back ACC starts on the road, at Miami on March 20 and Notre Dame on March 30. He struck out a career-high-tying 11 batters in three of the five starts, with eight and nine strikeouts in the other two March contests. Volini did not allow an earned run twice and held the opposition without a run once, to one run three times and two runs once.
The National Pitcher of the Month accolade is the latest award in 2025 for Volini, who was named to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason Watch List and a Midseason First Team All-America honoree by both D1Baseball and Perfect Game last week. He was the ACC Player of the Week on March 31 after his four-hit, two-run showing at Notre Dame a day earlier.
In D1Baseball's midseason position rankings, Volini checked in at No. 10 on the outlet's list of starting pitchers after he began the campaign at No. 48.
Volini and No. 9 Florida State return to action tonight at Florida on ESPN2, followed by a weekend ACC series at No. 25 Virginia Tech. A preview of the FSU-UF game can be found here.
