No. 2 Florida State Drops Middle Game to No. 4 UNC

5/16/2025 10:51:00 PM | Baseball

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In the second-to-last game of the regular season, the No. 2 Florida State baseball team lost to No. 4 North Carolina 11-1 in seven innings on Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium.

With the defeat, FSU suffers just its third series loss of the season. The series finale between two of the top four teams in the ACC standings is set for Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.

The Seminoles (36-13, 16-10 ACC) were held to one run on seven hits. The Tar Heels (39-11, 18-10 ACC) scored 11 runs on 13 hits.

Seven players accounted for Florida State's seven hits, including freshman first baseman Myles Bailey, who had an RBI, and junior shortstop Alex Lodise, who scored a run. Sophomore third baseman Cal Fisher extended his career-long hit streak to 16 consecutive games while Lodise has reached base safely in 16 games in a row.

Redshirt junior left-handed starter Joey Volini falls to 8-4. He allowed five runs on six hits with six strikeouts and four walks in 3.2 innings.

North Carolina took a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a sac fly followed by an RBI single. Volini got a flyout to leave the bases loaded for the second consecutive inning.

Florida State answered with a run in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. With two outs, Lodise singled up the middle and scored from third on Bailey's RBI double to left-center.

UNC extended its lead to 5-1 in the fourth as a hit batter brought in the first run and a single up the middle scored the next two. FSU put two on with two outs in the bottom half, but a strikeout ended the threat.

A two-out run scored in the fifth to make it 6-1 and two in the sixth extended Carolina's lead to 8-1. The Tar Heels scored three in the seventh on a home run to left-center for the 11-1 final.

The regular-season finale is on Saturday, May 17, at 2 p.m. ET. Tickets are available at Seminoles.com/Tickets or by calling the FSU ticket office at 850-644-1830.
