TALLAHASSEEÂ - The Florida State women's basketball team (6-13, 1-6 ACC) fell to RV/No. 23 North Carolina (15-5, 4-3 ACC) by a final score of 82-55 on Sunday at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.
Â
Graduate guard Jasmine Shavers led with 15 points, leading all scorers, going 3-of-7 from beyond the arc and a perfect 4-of-4 at the free-throw line. Shavers would also tally two assists alongside senior guard Amaya Bonner and junior guard Sole Williams. Junior guard Emma Risch would follow with 10 points, adding two three-pointers and converting her two attempts at the stripe.
Â
Sophomore guard Tatum Greene provided strong defensive effort, pulling down a team-high five rebounds to go with two steals and one block. Avery Treadwell also swatted two blocks.
Â
Bonner opened the home side scoring with a layup for the second straight game. North Carolina worked ahead early, but a string of four steals by the Seminole defense stalled the Tar Heels' momentum. Free throws from Bonner and a mid-range jumper from Davis helped cut down the point deficit as the defense forced seven turnovers, but UNC would maintain their lead at the conclusion of the first quarter, 17-8.Â
Â
A cold start to the second quarter was disrupted as Shavers got herself on the board with a triple and subsequent jumper. Risch and Sydney Bowles would follow up with threes of their own just 50 seconds apart, bringing the distance on the scoreboard down to single digits. A late run by North Carolina in the remaining four minutes pulled the Tar Heels ahead, 38-19.Â
Â
Bowles and Shavers tied for a team-leading five points. Greene led the effort on the glass with three rebounds while four different Seminoles recorded a pair each. Williams and Greene each recorded two steals, accounting for four of the team's five total first half takeaways.Â
Â
Layups within the first minute from Allie Kubek and Williams opened the second half scoring for the Seminoles. Though UNC would answer back, consecutive three-pointers from Williams and Shavers in the seventh minute cut further into the deficit. Risch added her second make from deep and a lone free throw from Treadwell would close out third quarter scoring for FSU, trailing 61-35 entering the final quarter.
Â
Shavers fired from the top of the perimeter to kick off fourth quarter scoring, followed up by a contested layup from Bonner. A corner three by freshman guard Mari Gerton, a jumper from Risch and a pair of free throws from Treadwell would round out the final two minutes of the game as the game ended 82-55 in favor of the Tar Heels.Â
Â
Florida State will hit the road for Dallas to face SMU on Thursday, Jan. 22 at the Moody Center. The game will air on the ACC Network Extra (ACCNX) at 7:30 p.m.
