1/27/2026 11:22:00 AM | Men's Basketball
TALLAHASSEE – Robert McCray V's first field goal against SMU on Saturday at the Moody Coliseum came at the 7:58 mark of the first half and gave Florida State a 22-21 lead. The basket also gave the Seminoles' point guard 1,400 points during his outstanding collegiate career.
For McCray V, his first of 10 baskets against the Mustangs came without fanfare or ceremony, just like each of the 518 field goals he has made during his 97-game collegiate career at Wake Forest, Jacksonville, and Florida State.
His 1,400th career point came is similar fashion to his career points Nos. 1,000, 1,100, 1,200, and 1,300. McCray V scored career point 1,300 earlier this season in Florida State's victory over Mississippi Valley State.
Unnoticed.
Just how McCray V likes it.
McCray V enters Wednesday's 7:00 p.m. game against Cal at the Donald L. Tucker Center with 1,419 career points. He's totaled 286 of his points as a Seminole and is Florida State's leader with a 14.3 points per game scoring average. McCray V scored 26 points in his first season at Wake Forest, totaled 1,107 points in two seasons at Jacksonville, and continues to add to his career total as a Seminole.

I didn't know that I had scored 1,400 points in my career, said McCray V as the Seminoles returned from an extended stay in Dallas following their road game against SMU. It's nice to see that I have scored that many points. The thing it means is that I've helped my teammates win games during my career.
McCray V is on quite a roll as he is averaging 20.5 points scored per game (41 total points) while shooting .447 from the field in his last two ACC games. He's also averaging 6.5 assists (13 total assists) and 1.5 steals (three total steals) in Florida State's victory over Miami and its narrow loss at SMU.
In the first half against SMU, I wasn't making any shots, said McCray V. I knew I had to do my part and step it up for the team in the second half.
McCray V stepped up in a big way as he totaled 17 of his 21 points in the second half as the Seminoles took the lead, and took the ACC road game down to the final buzzer.
McCray V scored 21 points against SMU, marking the third time he has scored 20 or more points in an ACC game this season. He also scored his ACC high of 22 against Duke and totaled 20 in Florida State's victory over Miami in Coral Gables. McCray V scored 17 second half points against SMU marking the sixth time he has scored in double-figures in the second half and eighth time this season he has scored in double-figures in the first or second halves of a game. He scored his season high of 21 points in one half in the second half against Florida and totaled his season-high of 29 points against the Gators in Gainesville.
When we were evaluating Robert McCray V out of Jacksonville, my biggest question was 'could he play the point guard position'? said Loucks. For most of his career, he has been a scoring guard. As a pass first guard myself, I wanted someone who could set up his teammates. To Rob's credit, he's studied film, he's leaned on our coaching staff, and he's really embraced being a pass first point guard who can score at a very high level. That has been very beneficial for our team.
McCray V's 21 points against SMU was the fifth time he has scored 20 or more points as a Seminole. He scored 29 points at Florida (November 11), totaled his ACC career-high of 22 against Duke (January 3), scored 21 against SMU, 21 against UMass (December 13 in the Orange Bowl Classic), and 20 in Florida State's win over Miami. McCray V has now scored 20 or more points in 29 different games during his career with 30 or more points coming four times. His career-high of 36 points came against Stetson in the 2024 Atlantic Sun Tournament on March 7, 2024.
In addition to leading the Seminoles in scoring, McCray V was credited with nine assists (and only two turnovers) against SMU and begins play against Cal as the total assists leader in the ACC with 130 assists.
Against SMU, McCray led the Seminoles in points and assists.
McCray V has 130 assists through the first 20 games of the season, giving him the most assists in a single season by a Seminole point guard since Trent Forrest totaled 138 assists during the 2018-19 season.
McCray V is tied for 15th nationally in total assists (130) and ranked 16th nationally with his career-high 6.5 assists per game average. He assumed control of the assist lead in the ACC with his fifth nine-assist performance against SMU. In two games last week, McCray V totaled 13 assists to make him the first ACC player to reach 130 assists during the 2025-26 season.
If you would have told me when the season began that Rob would come in and shatter all of my assist records, I would have been very pleased, said Loucks. He is a huge part of our success. He's one of our six seniors and someone we really need to produce at a high level to win games.
As McCray V looks to become the second Seminole to lead the team in scoring and assists in consecutive seasons, he's ranked among the ACC's top players in both statistical categories.
Asked whether he'd prefer to lead the Seminoles in points or assists, McCray V, who earned his bachelor's degree from Jacksonville in May, was torn.
I'd love to lead the team in both points and assists because that means I'd be helping my team win games, said McCray V. I don't think I can choose one. Winning games is all that matters to me.
That's who McCray V is.
He wants to go unnoticed for doing the noticeable things on the court.
