Junior guard Sole Williams was a catalyst for the second half offense, managing a career best 28-point performance on a career-high 11 made field goals, including four three-pointers. She also contributed five rebounds and one assist.
Senior guard Amaya Bonner continued to elevate her game throughout the season. She set a new season-high in points with 15 against the Cavaliers, just one point shy of her career best. Her six rebounds, three steals and three blocks tied career highs while her five assists set a new season best. Her assists and steals led the team and her blocks tied with graduate forward Allie Kubek for a team lead.
Graduate guard Jasmine Shavers was the third Seminole in double figures with 18 points, contributing three triples and seven rebounds. She would also add two assists and two steals.
Sophomore guard Tatum Greene provided early effort and remained a consistent facilitator throughout the game. She led the team with 10 boards against Virginia, tying a career high she set in the season opener against Florida A&M. Greene managed eight points as well as a block.
The Cavaliers opened with strong shooting while the Seminoles struggled to establish momentum early. Greene led the scoring with five points, while Pania Davis recorded two offensive rebounds as well as a block and a steal. Virginia led 31-15 at the end of the first quarter.
Florida State started the second quarter strong, generating a 9-0 scoring run while forcing three turnovers from Virginia over a three-minute span, but the Cavaliers answered. Late under-the-basket work from Bonner and Sydney Bowles in the final two minutes helped the Seminoles cut into the deficit as they trailed 45-32 at the half.
Florida State worked eight turnovers from Virginia while only ceding one in the second quarter. Bonner led all Seminole scorers with eight points as well as three assists and two steals at the halfway mark. Davis and Bowles pulled down three boards each.
Bonner surpassed her previous season best in points just minutes into the second half with a corner triple, helping Florida State to an early 7-0 run that forced Virginia into a timeout. Williams pressured with two three-pointers and a baseline layup to break into double figures herself as the Seminole defense held the opposition scoreless through the last 2:22 of the quarter. FSU outscored UVA 22-14 in the third quarter, trailing a close 59-54 heading into the fourth.
The home side scored first with a layup from Williams, but Virginia inched ahead by nine, 65-56 with 4:13 remaining. Shavers broke the ice scoring a quick seven points, converting a steal and then a triple on back-to-back possessions. On the next drive, Shavers drew a foul and converted a pair of free throws to cut it to two, 65-63. Two crucial layups by Williams in the final 16 seconds would tie the contest at 67-67, sending the Seminoles to their first overtime game of the season.
Both sides traded scores throughout the first period of extra time. Williams led with six points while Shavers and Bonner would contribute a combined three points.
The second overtime period, the Seminoles refused to quit as Virginia managed to pull away early and maintain a lead with timely free throw shooting. Shavers led the effort with five points while Williams added four, but the Seminoles would ultimately come up short 91-87.
It was the first overtime game since defeating Clemson, 82-79 on March 3, 2024, and first double overtime game since falling to Notre Dame 98-94, on Feb. 11, 2024.
Florida State will travel to Coral Gables to face Miami on Sunday, Jan. 11. The game will air on the ACC Network at 2 p.m.
