TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida State beach volleyball team splits competition this weekend, sending pairs to Huntington Beach, California, and Tavares, Florida, to compete in the Surf City/AVCA Collegiate Challenge and the Hickory Point Bid Event, respectively.
Gella Andrew and Saofe´ Duval enter the Surf City/AVCA Collegiate Challenge as the No. 9 seed, followed by teammates Jess Horwath and Kenzie Hultquist as the No. 10 seed. Andrew and Duval will compete in Pool Eight against pairs from Pepperdine, Boise State and Long Beach State. Horwath and Hultquist will compete in Pool Six against pairs from UCLA, Hawaii and Oregon.
Both Seminole pairs begin pool play in the second position and will look to earn a bid to the AVCA Pairs National Championship, scheduled for Nov. 6-8 in Huntsville, Alabama. Competition in California begins at 8:15 a.m. PST.
In Tavares, Florida, the Seminoles will also compete for bids to the AVCA Pairs National Championship. Avery Junk and Addison Junk enter the Hickory Point Bid Event as the top seed, followed by Brynn Hughbanks and Julia Tennoy. Rachel Heilbrun and Carra Sassack round out the group as the No. 4 seed.
The Hickory Point Bid Event begins Saturday with modified pool play, during which each pair will compete in two matches. The top two pairs from each pool will advance to a bid single-elimination bracket on Saturday, with the top three finishers earning bids to the AVCA Pairs National Championship. The remaining pairs will compete in additional bracket matches on Sunday to determine final tournament placements. Competition in Florida begins at 8:30 a.m. EST.
With multiple pairs competing on both coasts, Florida State will look to make the most of the weekend and secure additional bids to the AVCA Pairs National Championship. Strong performances in both tournaments would give the Seminoles valuable opportunities to continue their fall season on the national stage.
