TALLAHASSEE - The Florida State women's basketball team opened the regular season with a 81-51 victory over Merrimack College on Monday night at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center.

Monday night's contest marked the first meeting between the Seminoles (1-0) and the Warriors (0-1) in any sport. Florida State is 46-9 all-time in season openers, winning 11 straight.

Five Seminoles finished in double figures, with freshman guard Morgan Stewart leading all scorers with 13 points. Stewart also recorded four steals and three assists, as well as three rebounds.

Junior guard Tatum Greene and senior guard Sole Williams each recorded 11 points, each recording five field goals and a three. Greene tied her career best in steals with four and added five rebounds, an assist and a block. Freshman forward Missy Odom and fifth year guard Timaya Lewis-Eutsey notched 10 points apiece.

Odom, who got the start against the Warriors, became the first true freshman forward to join the starting five in a season opener since Valencia Myers got the nod against Troy on Nov. 6, 2018.  Other rookie notables include Natasha Howard's start against Alabama State on Nov. 12, 2010 and Ivery Slaughter's appearance in the opener against UNC-Greensboro on Nov. 8, 2013.

As a team, Florida State finished shooting 43 percent from the field (34-of-79) and added nine threes. Seven different players earned a triple, with Emma Risch recording three herself. Florida State generated 34 turnovers from the Warriors, converting them into 45 points. Defensively, 10 different Seminoles combined to swipe 18 steals from the Warriors, with both Greene and Stewart grabbing four.

The first quarter finished close, with the Seminoles holding a 16-15 lead. Greene paced all scorers with six points, finishing 3-for-3 from the field in the first 10 minutes. Florida State forced 12 turnovers from Merrimack, with Greene picking up two steals.

The second quarter continued at a slower pace until the Noles broke away with a 15-0 run in the final four minutes, highlighted by three consecutive threes that fell for fifth year guard Savannah Henderson, Risch and Stewart within a two-minute frame. Stewart impressed with a 9-point performance heading into the half while also recording three steals, finishing with a total of four takeaways at the end of the first half.

Florida State led Merrimack 38-19 at the half. The home side shot 43.2 percent from the field, adding four threes. Out of 14 total rebounds, Greene led with four, followed by Risch and Stewart who pulled down three each. The Seminoles also managed nine steals as part of 19 turnovers collected from the visitors.

Odom opened the second half with two consecutive layups in two minutes while senior forward Aga Makurat and Greene continued the barrage, adding threes of their own less than a minute apart. Williams, who had just two points in the first half, managed nine in the final 3:38 of the third quarter alone, helping Florida State to a 22-2 run in the last six minutes to close the third quarter with a lead of 67-28.

Sophomore guard Mari Gerton jumped on the board with a midrange shot to open fourth quarter scoring, and Asia Lee later added her first three-pointer and the team's eighth with 5:38 to go. Risch cut off a brief Warrior surge with her third triple, and Gerton added a fast break layup to cap the scoring.

Florida State will host North Florida on Thursday, Nov. 5 for the annual Education Day game. Tipoff is at 11 a.m. ET on the ACC Network Extra (ACCNX). Fans can also catch the radio broadcast with Scott Kornberg on 96.5 FM, on the Seminoles Game Day app and Seminoles.com.
