TALLAHASSEE – The Florida State men's tennis teams return home this weekend to host a Sunday doubleheader at the Scott Speicher Memorial Tennis Center, welcoming Jacksonville State and Southern Miss. The Seminoles will open the day against Jacksonville State at 10 a.m., then close the afternoon against Southern Miss at 3 p.m.
Florida State enters the weekend against Jacksonville State with a 3-0 all-time overall record, with its latest win against the Gamecocks coming from the 2024 season after a 7-0 sweep, where Justin Lyons and Azariah Rusher earned the first points of the season for the Seminoles in doubles action. Rusher also made quick work in his collegiate debut after earning the match-winning point for FSU.
Southern Miss brings a 2-2 record to Tallahassee this weekend after dropping a 4-0 decision at Samford on February 15. Sunday marks the second road match of the spring for the Golden Eagles and the 12th meeting in the series history. FSU holds an 11-0 record over Southern Miss, with the latest matchup coming on April 12, 2000, marking the seventh win in the Dwayne Hultquist Era after a 7-0 victory.
Florida State has opened the season 6-4, highlighted by a road victory in a rival fashion, defeating Florida in a tight 4-3 game. Newcomer Gabor Hornung started his journey with the Seminoles with a grueling three-set battle on court six. The Hungarian native won the first set 6-1 and the third set 7-5 to secure the final singles point for the Seminoles.
The newest ITA rankings were released on Thursday. The doubles pair of Erik Schiessl and Luis Felipe Miguel moved up to No. 14. Schiessl was ranked as the No. 62 singles player in the nation, while Azariah Rusher moved up to No. 81. Miguel checked in at No. 109.
Miguel has been a standout for the Seminoles, collecting seven wins in his first two months of the season, highlighted by a win over No. 97 Filip Gustafsson (Arizona).
Miguel and Schiessl were recently named the ACC Duo of the Week after a dominating performance against No. 8 Texas A&M to remain undefeated in doubles play. The Seminoles struck first as teammates Oren Ezerzer and Gabor Hornung delivered a convincing 6-1 victory on court three. Texas A&M responded with a win on court two, setting up a decisive battle on court one. Both teams were tied at 4-4 before Florida State's Miguel and Schiessl stepped up to close out a 6-4 win to clinch the doubles point.
