Seminoles Fall to No. 24 BYU in Five-Set Season Opener

TALLAHASSEE – The Florida State volleyball team (0-1) opened its 59th season Friday afternoon in a hard-fought 3-2 loss to No. 24 BYU (1-0) at Alico Arena in Fort Myers, Florida, in the Seminoles' first match under new head coach Lindsay Allman.
Junior opposite hitter Bailey Higgins led all players with 14 kills while hitting .423. Senior outside hitter Kyleene Filimaua added 13 kills. Filimaua also led the Seminoles with 11 digs and totaled 17 points.
Making her Seminole debut, junior setter Emma Lilo recorded a match-high 23 assists.
Florida State came out firing in the opening set, racing to a 20-5 lead behind three kills from Higgins and six service aces. Freshman outside hitter Sofia Moss recorded four consecutive aces during the run. The Seminoles closed out the set, 25-8 behind two kills apiece from Higgins and Moss. As a team, FSU hit a staggering .737 to begin the match.
The Seminoles carried their momentum into the second set, jumping out to an early 6-2 advantage. BYU battled back to tie 10-10 in a set that featured six ties. After a 13-13 deadlock, FSU went on an 8-2 run to take a 21-15 lead before closing out the set, 25-19 taking a 2-0 match lead.
BYU responded in the third set, opening with a 7-3 advantage. The Seminoles remained within striking distance at 11-8 before the Cougars pulled away to take the set, 25-12 and cut FSU's match lead to 2-1.
The fourth set featured another closely contested battle, with the Seminoles trailing 10-9 before BYU used a 4-0 run to take a 14-9 lead and force an FSU timeout.
After falling behind 19-13, Florida State fought back to within two at 21-19 following a BYU service error and two attacking errors. The Cougars held on to take the set, 25-20 and force a deciding fifth set.
BYU earned a 15-11 victory in the final set to take the match, 3-2.
The Seminoles continue play at the FGCU Invitational Saturday against VCU at 1 p.m. The match will not be streamed, while live stats will be available on Seminoles.com.
