TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State track and field team starts its 2021 indoor season this Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Gamecock Opener hosted by the University of South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. Saturday’s meet marks the first time FSU has competed since Feb. 2020.
“We’re really excited to be competing again.” said Florida State head coach Bob Braman. “It’s been 321 long days since our last competition. This is a very good opening meet for us. South Carolina has a great facility and we’re hoping for some good performances.”
Bob Braman is in the midst of his second decade at Florida State University as the third-longest tenured head coach in Seminole athletics. He begins his 18th season at the helm of the men’s and women’s track & field program.
Of the 24 student-athletes competing this weekend, the Noles return five All-Americans- Taylor Banks, Trey Cunningham, Isaac Grimes, Jhevaughn Matherson for the men and Ka’Tia Seymour for the women. Joining them will be eight new faces making their Seminole debuts at the Gamecock Opener.
Last Time Out
The Seminoles 2020 indoor track season concluded at the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, where the men won their 13th ACC title.
Senior Trey Cunningham claimed his third consecutive title and an ACC record in hurdles. He was also selected ACC Indoor Track Performer of the Year. For the women, Ka’Tia Seymour was selected as ACC Indoor Track Performer of the Year following a sweep at the ACC Championship 60- and 200-meter dash titles. That secured the Palatka, Fla. Native her third consecutive ACC Indoor Championship Track Most Valuable Performer award.
The meet is set to start at 11 a.m. ET and will go through 5 p.m. ET at the Carolina Indoor Track & Field Complex. No spectators will be allowed in the building per COVID-19 regulations.
The teams competing in the Gamecock Opener are: Coastal Carolina, Edward Waters. N.C. State, Norfolk State, South Carolina, South Carolina State, Southern Wesleyan, UNCC and Savannah State.
