TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Redshirt sophomore outfielder Robby Martin was named to the Golden Spikes Award Watch List Thursday, USA Baseball announced. Martin is one of 55 players on the preseason watch list.
Martin, from Tampa, hit .315 as a freshman, with 54 runs scored and 34 RBI over 67 games. He hit 17 doubles and four home runs while splitting time as FSU’s designated hitter and in the outfield. He earned ACC Player of the Week honors after a six-RBI game against Youngstown State, FSU’s first freshman to win the ACC honor since current Baltimore Oriole DJ Stewart did it in 2013.
Martin was named a freshman All-American and earned a spot on the ACC All-Freshman Team.
In the shortened 2020 season, Martin led FSU with a .324 average and 22 hits in just 17 games. He reached base at a .439 clip with four doubles, a triple and scored 10 runs. In right field, Martin did not commit an error. His improved defense was on display at No. 1 Florida when he robbed a first-inning home run as FSU beat the Gators 2-0 in Gainesville.
Martin hopes to be Florida State’s fifth Golden Spikes Award winner, the most for any program in Golden Spikes history. Martin would join Mike .Fuentes (1981), Mike Loynd (1986), J.D. Drew (1997) and Buster Posey (2008).
