⚾: Seminoles Fall to Top Seed Auburn

AUBURN, ALA. – Three-seed Florida State (34-24) lost to No. 14 national seed Auburn (39-19) Saturday night, falling to the Tigers 21-7 in front of 3,409 fans at Plainsman Park. The Seminoles will now play two-seed UCLA in an elimination game Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Eastern.

Auburn broke the game open in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs before recording the first out. FSU’s three pitchers in the inning – Conner Whittaker, Ross Dunn and Kyle McMullen – were all making their NCAA Tournament debuts for the Seminoles.

Trailing 3-0, FSU got on the board in the third inning on Alex Toral’s 13th double of the year. He leads FSU with 49 RBI on the season.

Auburn’s seven runs in the fourth inning were the most FSU has allowed in any inning this season.

Bryce Hubbart (8-3) made the start for the Seminoles, allowing three runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings of work. Auburn starter Joseph Gonzalez (7-2) allowed four hits and three runs over 6.0 innings.

McMullen – a fifth-year senior that has battled through injuries during his time at Florida State – pitched 3.0 innings and had three strikeouts, both career highs. Pitchers Jackson Nezuh and Andrew Armstrong made their postseason debuts in the seventh inning.

Freshman Treyton Rank and redshirt freshman Sebastian Jimenez hit the first home runs of their Seminole career. Rank’s scored three runs on a blast over the scoreboard in left-center field on the first pitch he saw in the NCAA Tournament. Jimenez sent a solo shot to left field in just his eighth career at-bat.

Isaiah Perry and Rank added RBI singles in the eighth inning to provide FSU’s final runs. Rank’s four RBI tied a career high.

Sunday’s game is a rematch of Friday’s regional opener, when FSU beat the Bruins 5-3.
